Having been reminded by kaputnik of this, here is a possible route with markers of interest:

    http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/71819692

Please feel free to add or comment. There are possible extensions - e.g. over the Meldons and back via Romanno Bridge (that's quite a big extension) or to include West Linton. I have indicated some possible food stops: near Eddleston, Whitemuir, Carlops. On this route we might see moorland wildlife and we would also pass by Gladhouse Rsr.

I suggest we start from Eskank (why would I do that :) ) by the two (formerly three) craws.

BTW an important part of the route will be to pop over to Carlops to recreate k's photo:

With respect to dates, these are those weekend dates that I can't do in March:

11, 31 March (both cycling events!)

Looks interesting, never gone out riding with other folk before, usually too knackered after my weekly commute. I am in Gorebridge so an Eskbank start would suit me. Will keep a look out for possible dates.

... is there an echo in here?

Amir, I'd be up for this. I need to check school holiday dates and so on.

I may be able to arrange refreshments at the end.

amir, good one. I am interested, depends on dates - the additional loop via west linton adds ~5 miles but gets the full benefit of a (usually quiet) deanfoot road - I guess you know that as its 'your manor'.

    cheers

Looks tempting and I could manage the distance. Only three hills to fall behind on.

If an extra loop to West Linton is desired, here is a possible route that also takes in Carlops.

Does anyone know if the minor road/track between West Linton and Carlops is cyclable with narrow road tyres? And what about the last bit or do we have to turn right towards the main road near the end?

How are people fixed for weekend of 17/18 March?

I've not been all the way along there, only the south end of it and only on foot.

It might be slow going/not much fun on narrow tyres.

This shows the first junction you'd come to 1km from West Linton:

(Actually, I'd recommend going up the Baddinsgill Road and turning right after 1km to cross the Lyne Water.)

This shows the "turn right" track towards the end:

Regarding Marth 17/18th, I prefer Sundays please as my usual ride is on a Sunday so it will be easier getting it past SWMBO.

    Cheers, Dave C

The 17th/18th is fine for me with my preference being for the 18th.

SWMBO has reminded me 18th is Mothers day. Saturday is fine but Sunday is out for me.

Seem to have a bit of a conflict for 17/18 due to non-standard celebration day. Tom, can you do the Saturday? Or should we try the following Sunday (when BST starts)?

I think 17th/18th works for me! Mother-time can be worked around cycle-time

I did the Gladhouse - Lamancha - Whitmuir - the Moor Road - Penicuik section of this route yesterday. The road surface between Gladhouse and the A703 is in shocking nick (loads of badly filled potholes (predominantly on the left hand side), standing water over sizeable sections of the left carriageway, a really heavy road surface) until you get to the hairpin descent to the main road where it suddenly becomes nice new tarmac.

After that it's not too bad, apart from the fast descent on the A701 from the Moor Road to Penicuik, where the coloured surface is badly broken up, making for a bumpy ride at speed (and probably even bumpier at a leisurely pace).

There are no bike stands at Whitmuir, but a large group of cyclists there seemed pretty happy to leave their bikes unattended. Applying the principle of I've carried a lock so I'm damn well going to use it I attached mine to what I think was a duck or chicken coop round the side of the building.

Yeah - cyclists have been suffering on that section for many years. The road was closed for bridge repairs for quite a while a year or two ago and I don't know why Midlothian didn't take the opportunity to do something.

The worst bit is about a mile and you can usually get away with cycling on the wrong side. Once you get to the Borders border it is much better.

    Either day fine by me.

Do we need to bring a spade/pickaxe?

Let's go for Sat 17 March then. How's about 10am start? Too late?

Later I will try to get approx numbers so I can organize refreshments on our return.

I do a mean banana loaf. I could drop a sample loaf off at Amir's prior to ride as incentive to any legs tiring of miles or heads tiring of "yet another" bit of old brick, stone or wall.

    Right.

I was thinking of peeling (sic) off before end.

    Might meet in middle instead...
