Or text 80295. Green MSP Alison Johnstone and Spokes Ian Maxwell talking about a cycling summit. Ian emphasised that rising cycling numbers should continue - despite the tragedy yesterday.
Going downhill.... Taxi driver telling how he can't abide bikes going up his inside as he could turn without seeing them! He is a professional driver and ex cyclist etc so all very contrary.
Aaaaaarrrrgggggghhhh!
Queue middle aged shouting at the radio :-<
This is why I avoid this kind of thing...
Yes, "down with this sort of thing" I say.
I never have the strength to listen to any of this sort of stuff, because it reveals how the public (and probably the police and courts) think, rather than the rarified pro-bike air that we breathe around here.
Listening just now. Not too bad, though again it's "blame the victim" quite a lot, but some very good contributions, such as the guy from Stirling with his school cycling project. Also the chap from Aberdeen calling for strict liability to be implemented... Very interesting contribution too from the guy originally from the Netherlands.
Also kudos to Alison Johnstone for getting this issue onto the agenda.
Mood was one of cyclists putting themselves in danger by not using; mirrors, bright yellow, lights, hand signals, quiet roads, cycle training etc Paths were thought to be a good thing except some road users pet hate is to see a bike get advantage. That tension caused by overpromising what a car can and can't do contributes to accidents. A small proportion of drivers bring it upon themselves to scare cyclists with agressive driving. Some cyclists too side with the 'you deserve trouble for not riding bike x and wearing y'. One guy phoned to say he was ashamed at how fellow cyclists broke the law... Much agreement by the non-cycling listenership I'm sure but not an excuse to justify using a car as a weapon.
Motorists are breaking the law every day! Speeding, RLJs, parking on double yellows/corners of junctions/cycle lanes, etc., driving without a licence/insurance (tiny minority but then so are the law-breaking cyclists)...
But it's okay because they have "might is right" and "mob rule" on their side...
The cyclist/advanced motorist from Dundee who claimed more cyclists on the road will lead inevitably to more deaths.....maybe. maybe not. Counter intuitive, but more cyclists could make roads safer: "safety in numbers" aspect and more drivers expecting and/or knowing how to deal with cyclists properly.
Very good point made about the two urban motorways recently completed in Glasgow (at a cost of hundreds of millions), with not a scrap of provision for parallel cycle infrastructure. Next up, new Forth road bridge without any cycle lanes too...
