I previously provided an estimate of what 5% of relevant transport budgets would mean for cycling next year as £1.04m. This was an estimate as the Revenue funding picture was not complete and I deliberately estimated on the low side so as not to disappoint. Finance and Transport Officers have been going through the detail of the revenue budgets since then and I can update you as follows:

The total Council budget for cycling will increase from £600k Capital and c£100k Revenue this year to £957k Capital and £478k Revenue for 12/13 . That's £1.435m in total - (£395k more than the previous estimate and more than doubling the cycling budget from 11/12).

Our priorities for Cycle spending in the year ahead will be up for discussion at the Cycle Forum in a fortnight's time but on the Revenue side will include a cycle leasing scheme (which I will provide details of shortly) and a package of cycle promotion measures targeted at potential cyclists/ employers and other places of work, study, leisure or accommodation where people might be encouraged to travel to/from by bike.

    Kind regards

    Gordon

I gather that UoE sits on the cycle forum. Anyone know who this is, what the Uni tends to support/not support, what we might encourage them to do?

Well you folk in Southside/Newington ward are lucky to have such pro-cyclinf councillors. Not only Cllr Mackenzie, but also Steve Burgess. Is Cameron Rose pro-cycling? It's not quite clear, and I don't know about Ian Perry either.

Here in Leith Walk ward I'm only aware of Maggie Chapman who is strongly supportive of active travel. As for the other three, haven't heard much about their preferences which is probably a bad sign...

    "Is Cameron Rose pro-cycling?"

He's a keen cyclist about town!

Even been known to post here occasionally -

Cameron does cycle and has responded to many of my emails to councillors about cycling issues. We don't always agree, but he is basically pro-cycling.

I don't even know if Ian Perry really exists.

I suspect after the controversy a few years ago he's been keeping his head down.

@SRD we could for a start ask the UoE to build a cycle path right round George Square. That way we'd be able to cycle between the MMW cycle path and the Uni's various cycle sheds/racks/buildings (without having the fillings shaken from our teeth).
