After cycling into the teeth of a hurricane-strength headwind on my morning commute every single day for the last ten years, it is with great pleasure that I can announce on this forum that I have the solution.
As of tomorrow I shall commence my designs for a Buckminster Fuller style geodesic dome which shall encompass the whole of the city (everything, say, inside the ring road). This will have the effect of preventing nasty wind and rain from entering Edinburgh, providing a balmy Mediterranean spring climate enabling everyone to cycle or walk to work in shorts and t-shirts. Detailed cost benefit analysis I undertook whilst cycling in this morning encouragingly shows that the whole thing will be funded by an increase in tourism - the resulting increase in temperature of around 5 degrees being clearly the only thing that is needed to make Portobello Beach an international destination.
The only drawback I can see at this stage is that the enclosed nature of the roof may create a few ventilation issues which will mean, unfortunately, that we'll have to ban anything causing high emissions. I'll have to give more thought as to what might come under that category.....

Improving the commute....

All sounds good to me!
On a tinier note I have thought it would be a good idea to cover the area between the bus station and Waverley steps.
AND have an additional tram stop on Princes Street at Waverley Bridge.
Could make a nice covered interchange which would include the tour buses and taxis (if they are evicted from the station).

Could you not just move so you live the other direction from you work? Morning commute headiwnd problem instantly solved!

they did this to the Muirhouse shops - a complete disaster, the rain used to clean the mess, now it is dark, gloomy, dirty, stinking and rarely used. Even feels quite damp inside.
tj - do not move your house to Balerno, if you work in Edinburgh. You have the wind behind you on the way down the hill into work then in your teeth on the way back up the hill [can use WoL Path - total mudslide beyond Colinton yesterday)

WoL path and its ilk are why "racers" are flawed as general use bikes imho. Cyclo-cross (with mudguards), hybrid or tourer styles are infinitely more suitable! After all, I wouldn't expect to drive to work/the shops in a single seat formula racing car....!
The mudfest is fine on the above listed types, as long as you're not in a huge hurry, in which case the run up to Currie/Balerno will make you sweaty! :-)Posted 12 years ago # -
