"based on the British touring bikes of the 1950s"

Not exactly - more likely the Raleigh roadsters that used to be universal in the Red bits of Africa (French colonies had Peugeot).

A lot were made in Nottingham and sent CKD (Completely Knocked Down).

There was a bike shop in Covent Garden in the 70s which started when an 'interesting things' emporium order a lot of cheap 'traditional bikes' (Flying Pigeon) and discovered that part of the price was price was due to the fact that they arrived in tea chests in bits. Bundles of spokes were tied together with pink ribbon.

Fransina Mamabolo works as a shop assistant in a store called the China Mall in Johannesburg, where bikes are sold for as little as $50.

"A bicycle for $130 is too expensive," she says. "It is unaffordable for many people. That company will have a problem if they are trying to attract the low-income market."
