  2. Just skipped off when I changed down to the granny. 2 seconds and back on. Gloves are now properly christened as commuting gloves.

Don't want to sound smug or self satisfied(!) but having had the same problem I now try to have a couple of pairs of surgical gloves in my bag. Weigh nothing and handier than putting chain gunge over everything you touch for the rest of the trip. You can even use them for first aid if you're that way inclined ;-))

I solved that problem by looking a little helpless and blackly handed until a lorry driver hailed me from across the road, offering a box filled with tissues imbued with some sorcery that hoiked the lot off in no time.

"...box filled with tissues imbued with some sorcery..."

I was disappointed to see that Swarfega-imbued baby-wipes actually exist the last time I was in Screwfix. Such a concept should have remained unsullied by an imperfect physical incarnation.

Although I usually carry some Lidl baby-wipes in my bag I didn't have them on Wednesday night when a co-cyclee snapped his chain and had to remove a couple of links. Poor bloke had to wipe his hands on his sick.

    Ugh!

I hope that was meant to read "sock". Leaf-litter and water makes a good natural Swarfega.

Its a rare day when I'm not covered in soot and grime, whats a little grease?

Oh and a packet of demerera sugar added to soap makes a great exfoliant.

@DaveC nitrile surely, amateur ;-p. Actually, whatever is free when it comes to putting a chain back on ;-)

The bar tape on my old bike was a sort of light pearly greyish-yellow, but was quite shiny so didn't pick up too much filth. Browsing bar tapes yesterday I was intrigued by how many white soft-touch bar tapes are available these days and what measures users thereof must have to take (besides employing a separate mechanic) to avoid it getting all besmirched.

@wingpig I have white bar tape on all my bikes, its not bad really, it seems to get uniformly dirty over time, and a wee wipe with a pledge infused duster cleans it up a treat.

.....unless of course you do an @anth and add chain gunk

Which is why you need to carry nitrile/latex etc chuckaway gloves

Pledge? Handlebars? Really? It doesn't make them all slippy?

I dont recommend it pre-ride! I was sceptical at first, but entirely fine to do when you get home and are riding next morning.

Warning though - dont spray onto the bike, only onto a cloth (in case you get it on brake blocks etc)

I just have grubby ex-white handlebars. The low-effort solution again.
