VeloVision pointed out a video on Alex Moulton and his design philosophy.

    Alex Moulton design video

A little bit dryly narrated (1998 and made for educational use), but fascinating none-the-less!

Given the emphasis on design and testing it perhaps explains a little of the cost of the "New Series" (£900 to £15,000!)

To the best of my (ignorant) knowledge, I've never seen a Moulton, but having watched the video, I'd love to have a go!

    Anyone ever tried one?

    Bet you have.

    "Anyone ever tried one?"

    It?

Suspension that works - on Edinburgh roads.

Never ridden any of the silly expensive ones.

60s ones greatly improved by alloy rims -16" (same size as Brompton) and better brakes.

Lower gears than original essential for Edinburgh.

Mk3 (different rear suspension) can be upgraded into really impressive machines.

AMs are the 'new classic'. Better front suspension 531 spaceframe - 17" wheels. Not 'cheap' anymore on ebay.

Pashley APBs probably better value - generally lighter in recent years - 20" wheels.

There was a craze for small wheeled bikes in the early Seventies. I wonder if Moulton inspired it or was just part of it.

I think Moulton singlehandedly invented the small wheel craze, when it was done right with high pressure tyres and a modicum of suspension. Bikes like the Chopper had their roots in the earlier RSW line, which were an ill-received patent-avoiding cashing in on the desire for a practical unisex bike. Had today's skinwall tyre technology been available back then, it might've been a very different story.

The mk3 Moultons are good machines as chdot says. If you see one for sale, it deserves to be saved. I'd have one, but need (garage+1).
