I have a lovely Charge Duster which was my first "custom" build, now it was built up way back(!) in 2005 with a set of 2004 Marzocchi Bomber XC forks. They are pretty much unchanged having had limited use, and are fine on a bumpy track (certainly at my level of ability!). They don't have a lockout so hill climbing can be a bit, err, "bouncy". Should I consider upgrading to a newer set (and if so, what sort), or just enjoy the setup I have? :-/

The second part of my question is really a Madame Raven question ;-)
I very recently gave up on having an uncomfy old MTB saddle on the bike and put a lovely B17 (the one with hammered copper rivets) on to it. I now have a white hardtail MTB with a brown saddle, is this a fashion faux pas meaning I need to change the grips/gear cables etc to match (not possible on hydraulic disc brakes and the only brown grips I've seen are ugly), or is it acceptable on grounds of comfort and class? :-/

MTB's are meant to be ugly, though.

Everything looks better with a Brooks on it. I have a white Croix de Fer with brown saddle (not Brooks), brown bar tape and brown mud guards. Cable outers are black. Looks sweet to me although I can't promise that I won't change the outers in time, when that becomes necessary anyway.

Since the word fashion has appeared, sense has left the building so I'd say the Brooks looks wrong on a style of bike that is ridden a lot of the time out of the saddle.

@Tom, but 50% of the time probably in the saddle for a non-competition XC bike, so better unfashionable than suffering discomfort or loss of circulation to important bits?

You might need to Proofide the underside of the saddle if you're getting it wet regularly.

good point, though I'm hoping the combination of crudcatcher and underseat toolbag will stop most of the wetness :-), is certainly worked the other day despite everything else getting muddy and wet! :-o

edited to add, I suppose I could always add the carradice if needs be to ensure nothing above it gets wet! ;-)

(My third B-17, addictive aren't they!)
