@lionfish - a mini-critical-mass on Monday then? sounds like that could be fun
Thanks for mentioning the Zazou coffee Firday 30th March - 7.30 start time though! He's opening up extra EXTRA early just for us!

Goerge Street has just (about) been resurfaced so if you rode en mass along it you would have a clearer run.

The other thing to be aware of is that the sequence of lights isn't the best. Depending on which lane you want to be in on West Maitland Street you may want to watch for traffic turning left from Grosvener Street.

Just to add to info overload.

    What to wear??

Assume journey too short for you to want to change/shower at work.

"Layers" is best so you can take one or more off - not always entirely practical on a commute!

Dress so that you need a bit of exercise to warm up...

I like gloves and scarf - easy to take off.

    Some people prefer buffs.

Then there's bags and luggage - who said cycling was simple?

"Goerge Street has just (about) been resurfaced"

    Yes -

    (Sunday - hardly any traffic!)

Much better than it was. Bit random with the provision of Advance Stop Lines/Zones and light sequences.

Yes definatley missing ASL's and other white lines. There is a rubbish phase at the second set of lights from Charlotte Sq (I think) which takes an age to change. Infact I seem to recall the green man going through 2 phases before the road went to green. I just get off and walk across now [no shame me]

I'm with you in the getting off and walking camp, "I'm a p'destrin just now, see?"

I do that every morning at the juction of Wester Hailes Road, Murrayburn Road and Westburn Avenue (next to the shops at Wester Hailes). There's two closely-spaced sets of lights to go through and the phasing of the lights changes the second to red as the first goes green - so you have to wait twice. If I time it right, I can get off, walk across the junction and be almost at Longstone Bus Depot before the traffic catches up.

From Saturday 24th March, the tram worksite at Haymarket will be extended. This will involve the closure of West Maitland Street between the Haymarket junction and Palmerston Place, along with a considerable redesing of traffic routes in the area.

No doubt they are still working on cycle diversions...

This might have an unfavourable effect on my current favoured Dewar Place escape route, too.

I wish I'd seen this flowchart before I found out it's right, the scary way.

From magnatom, who posts here as it happens:

Edit: too wide. You'll need to click the picture to see it fully, but the text it comes with is grand advice too.

Aw, this is all totally fantastic!

spytfire - I'm picking up my bike on Friday and doing a few test runs on Sunday, if I'm feeling confident I will get in touch next week, thanks!

The article from that last post was super helpful too!

Just to make people aware that there's a load of resurfacing and associated works going on in the area of the Shell garage on Dalry Road. There were temporary traffic lights yesterday evening but they'd gone again this morning - I expect they will be back though.

Not, in my opinion, a reason to change one's route, but I thought I would let you know.

Ah that probably explains why traffic has been so bad the last few days, getting up Henderson Terrace has been even slower than normal.

Dalry has been slow recently, worth it if they fix the bad tarmac at the bus stop opposite shell garage. But maybe worth WoL anyway. Not on Monday though, I'm an escort then. Didn't cycle today as had ill kids to stay home and help care for (and take out of house to grab a pleasant two hour barge technology geek out session with two barge owners iPads and Android phones) in a rush tomorrow but thinking with the diversions the river is the best way to Stockbridge.

Fimm that was bad and the massive iron sheet over the hole as I sped down ardmillan to catch the green light.,just before haymarket chap observed flashing amber at pedestrian crossing only to then speed through the red at the tram curtailed junction but I observed two pieces of considerate driving amidst the melee

"massive iron sheet over the hole" - you mean in the middle of the Dalry Rd/Gorgie Rd/Admillan etc junction? That has been there for a while. It is only a problem to me when I'm coming from Dalry Road heading to Gorgie Road and it is easily avoidable from there as I'm usually coming from stationary at the lights anyway.

Incidentally I saw the most jaw-dropping piece of cycling I've ever seen at that junction the other day, coming Dalry to Gorgie. The cyclist was stopped in front of the lights on the left-hand side of the road - on the sharp left into Henderson Terrace. She couldn't see that the left filter had gone green and I couldn't work out why she didn't just make her left turn when cars started passing her. However when the straight on light went green she then went all the way round on the left before going down Gorgie Road... I didn't notice that she signalled, and she got hooted at by a driver who not unreasonably expected her to go up Ardmillan Terrace. I did contemplate having a word, but in the end I didn't.

I read a tweet where a passenger on a bus heard the bus driver asking someone is flo yellow how he was susspoed to get through Haymarket. If the busses can't get through then everyone else is knackered... :-)

I think Monday could be quite the ride...
@bluejeangirl you have picked a baptism of fire start, once you have conquered this nothing else will phase you again, ever.

Fimm - that is the sheet - it was a bit of a surprise coming down Ardmillan at speed but I did swerve slightly into the other lane and then back into the LHS in time to spot the upcoming roadworks.

The fiveways junction can throw people for sure.

Hello, I live in Gorgie and cycle down to Leith most days. I do a combination of Water of Leith and the north Edinburgh paths normally. Very rarely take the roads as it's pretty stressful.

What time are you planning on going on Monday morning? I'd like to give the roads a go with other people. It would be good to have someone to cycle with. I'd need to be in Leith by 9.15. Have people organised a place to meet?

hmm, test rides on Sunday could make for some fun!

I'm going to see how I feel after Sunday before I give it a shot on Monday. I have to be in work for 8am which is awkward for others I guess. Most other days I need to be on Princes St by 9.30

Spent part of the afternoon trying to make sense of the new arrangements.

    Didn't really manage.

Usual mix of WHY!?, danger, unexpected danger, missed opportunities and people doing things they shouldn't (in no particular order).

Photos downloading, I'll put a selection up later.

Don't expect anything as sensible as 'go this way'.

I'm tempted to go to Haymarket on Monday morning just to gawp.

I suspect that commuters on foot may be even more outraged than cyclists...
