Immense frustration!

    So, I finished re-assembling my hub gear at about 1am last night. Rode it around outside on the road for 30 seconds to prove it worked. Put it away and go to bed happy.

    This morning - front tyre flat. What's more, the tyre is off the rim and the tube has exploded along a ~4 inch section. The tyre bead is intact, but it's pulled free superficial rubber from the bead area...

    Can't find any of the fat 700c tubes I bought with the tyres, so I grab a thin 700 from the flat pile on the grounds that it doesn't make much difference.

    Fix flat, put in tyre, start to pump... HSSSSSSS

    Fix flat just next to first flat, put in tyre, start to pump... HSSSSSSS

    Abandon and get on MTB (from 15 minutes early, now running 10 minutes late).

    A bit concerned that either the rim or the tyre is damaged as otherwise hard to explain how it could have exploded from a 'steady state'. Pressure ~80psi of a recommended 50-95.

    So, still no luck riding the white bike... AAARGH.

    Dave, I've had something similar and there was some minor damage (manufacturing) to the front tyre where bead joins sidewall. It also just suddenly happened (during day in the office) with no prior warning. The subsequent tubes poke through enough to contact the rim, and tear on it then pffffffffffff

    I've got a new tube in at 30psi and it seems fine, so I'm going to go up to 50 and see what happens. I can't really see how it could have gone without something (tyre or rim) having developed a fault, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed..

    So is the Duomatic doing what it should do now? Quite keen to try it although I have to be away sharp tonight.

    Yep, it works nicely... feels quite solid and no friction that I can notice even in high gear.

    I can leave it with you while I've got the Furai? You'll probably want higher gearing though... now 51/71" but if I just had MMW to contend with, I'd have something like 60/83".

    Much much easier to tow the trailer with 51" gear than 71"!

    That would be good to have for a few days. Thinking it might be an option for a PB - 51/71 would be good ratio - although some people might want even lower.

    Much more useable than singlespeed IMO - can come with or without coaster brake too, but would need one I think, as PB has no other brake mechanism than drums, right? There's no drum 2 speed hub alas.
