I'm after information on external bike storage for tenements.

The stair in question is in Bruntsfield, and bike use is growing - which is good. Unfortunately there's not enough space in the ground level stairwell passage and bikes are being hauled up and down the stair which inadvertantly causes some scrapes and scuffs on the new stair decoration. This doesn't go down well with owners who have all chipped in for the cost of the redecoration.

Can't really see us getting the pavement bike storage furniture as there's already loads of shop and communal waste containers in position.

Plan B - no bikes go upstairs and we store bikes in the back green! But how to do this securely and successfully? Put down slabs with racks anchored into them once in position? Anchor some form of U-bolt into the walls? As the building is B-listed would we need planning permission for anything attached to the walls or to put up an awning/roof of some sort?

Any ideas, or being pointed in the right direction, would be extremely appreciated. Likewise knowledge of grants, or companies willing to install a solution for free in return for effusive publicity, would be very gratefully received ;o)

    Try cycling@edinburgh.gov.uk

I've edited this to remove a particular worker's name and number.

    Thanks Kirst,

Scott's a very helpful bloke, used to stay in Bruntsfield so knows the problems of stair life and bikes. Unfortunately Bruntsfield's not one of the areas involved in the pilot scheme.

He's directed me to Chris Brace, a Cycling Officer, who'll be back in tomorrow, but advises that cycle racks will be installed across at the RBS before the end of April. WooHoo for the council!

shonan - I was told that the work was actually supposed to be done by the end of March, but they've been delayed. The WooHoo was for it actually happening, not the timescale :o)

fimm - I've been on there too and asked them for some advice as well, as we're looking at ways of storing the bikes outside at the back.
