Abuse on the road: ignore or call the cops?

Daresay that this will have been done to death before, but I would be interested to know what other folk consider is a serious enough incident to report to the police.

I had an air horn blasted into my ear tonight from the passenger of a car that passed me just at the old Eastern General turnoff on Seafield Road. He stretched his arm out to get close for maximum effect. It was a bunch of lads, who laughed when I gave the reflex gesture, but the noise was very loud & I'm sure some people could get shaken up (not good on a bike in heavy traffic). Would passing their number on to the police have been an overreaction?

custard- That was my first reaction, then on consideration the poncey inner liberal voice piped up- just daft lads, make trouble for them by involving the cops & they'll hate bicyclists even more blah blah.

I've passed numbers on to the cops and they have paid a visit.

I've very identifiable in Airdrie/Coatbridge and I still have no hesitation about doing this.

I might not be troubled by their behaviour but someone who is less comfortable on a bike could be very frightened and fall off.

Tell the Police. They will refuse to do anything about it but if more cyclists keep reporting stuff to them then eventually they may be forced to take notice.

There was supposed to be a report card on here (for both good and bad driving) but I can't find them?

Thanks for the advice- I must say I think you are right, but a lot of us are prone to be wimps & hope it will get better without becoming embroiled ourselves.

One of the old boys in my gym was a retired copper of the old school. He liked to tell the tale of when he was a rookie and happened on a line that served him well until he got too senior to be arresting anyone.

He was facing off a bundle of lads on his own and one of them had pointedly made this disparity clear. He looked at them and said "Aye, there's about a dozen of you. There's two thousand in my gang."

Now, he was a storyteller, and I'm not in any way convinced this ever happened, but I like phrases to be turned neatly, and old Jim did just that.

If you're a law-abiding citizen, there's now three thousand in your gang.

    Yes, call it in.

Report it. This isn't careless "larking around". It's premeditated and deliberate. Let the Police do their job, I'm sure if they type in the registration and find it has no insurance, previous, or outstanding fines then they might do something about it.

Glad it wasn't me it happened to! I jump out of my skin at sudden loud noises, cars back-firing, ambulances starting up their sirens etc...I hate the 1 o'clock gun even when I know it's about to go off.
So definitely report them I'd say.

A woman ran at me "for a laugh" while I was cycling home one night and I had to swerve into the road to avoid what could have been a horrible hit for me and her, of course she was "just messing around" but a bus or taxi and I'd be dead. I tried to point this out and her boyfriend/gorilla tried to physically assault me and I had to have an "altercation" police said that because he ran away there was nothing they could do. So yes I report it now as that sort of behaviour can and does lead to deaths.

    A policeman writes -

    "

If its not reported then we don't know it is happening. Report it every time. Same with Bike thefts.

Generally I've never bothered, and the one time that I did report something (with video) it was quietly dropped and I never heard anything more about it...

Not worth the hassle IMO, although in principle it's a good idea (even if only to document the lack of police action).
