First early morning commute tomorrow for a 9am lecture at Craighouse. Anyone else cycle that direction? My normal route is Leith Walk area - north bridge - up past the national museum - tollcross - meadows - morningside - and up to craighouse.
Some company would be nice if anyone is headed that way.
I ride a white ladies giant expression dx (like this one)

@Zen - I've an off-forum friend that might share the commute with you to just before the museum - they head to Kings Buildings.

If you PM me your email address, I'll pass it on to her.

Zen - hope it went well. I do cycle that way, but unfortunately only in the evening. I would recommend avoiding Tollcross and getting into the Meadows at Middle Meadow Walk, you can then avoid traffic until rejoining the road up at Bruntsfield.

Watch the right turn into Morningside Drive - you need to be extra assertive. I find it best to take primary position at the lights by Morningside Clock (i.e. ensure you hold the lane so cars can't pass on your right hand side) while signalling your intention to turn right. Takes some getting used to, as buses will pass on the left as you wait to turn.

Of course, if you do go via Tollcross, it would make as much (or more) sense to go down Gilmore Place, turn left onto Grays Loan (just before road joins colinton road), and then onto Myreside rd, which turns into Craighouse. The hill feels steeper this way than Morningside drive, but you have avoided climbing church hill, then dropping back into Morningside.

Craighouse is nice weather if you're a goat, but that route is hugely nicer to cycle than the Morningside bear pits.

If you want to avoid Tollcross and stick to cycle paths and really quiet roads, you could take the route across the Meadows, turn left past the Bike Co-op and then make for Canaan Lane and Cluny Avenue. This avoids the right turn across Morningside Road described above.http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/1852925/

This is the way I go if I can't be bothered with the concentration needed on Morningside Road...

Wow thanks for all the advice guys :D

@Morningsider and @Greenroofer thanks for the route suggestions they definitely look like useful changes. Morningside road is kinda terrifying lol and I am not a fan of that right turn into morningside drive.

@SRD I tried cycling up craighouse road before and I think I prefer to take my chances with the right turn into morningside drive. I am not yet fit enough to make it all the way up craighouse road with its scary nearly vertical incline lol.

@Uberuce... I'm not entirely sure I actually understand your comment :S Sorry lol.

This morning's commute went really well and I made it to uni faster than I have done before. Took me an hour and ten mins rather than the hour and a half/hour and 45 it normally takes me. - Yes i know, I'm a slow cycler but I'm new to cycling regularly and it will be a wee while before I'm fully confident with Edinburgh's roads - that and panniers with heavy books/folders in kinda slow you down a wee bit.

    I get that a lot.

The hill at Craighouse is a scumbag, but it does have the decency to be infamously steep and also short, so it's neither a cop-out nor a major inconvenience to use the 24" gear. Oh, that means get off and push. Two feet = two foot = two times 12 inches.

If you ever hear people talking about gear inches, you can safely ignore them, since your bike has gears.

Greenroofer's route is probably the best.
