blimmin beeb
when i posted it showed heavy snow in tomorrows forecast :oon a side note
I see TBC have 700cx35 (700cx28 just now)studded marathons in stock
If I went for them,I would need to remove my mudgaurds :(Posted 12 years ago # -

On my bike I ran a 35mm Marathon Winter at rear, 40mm at front using the standard mudguards (P45s IIRC), I just pushed them as far away from the wheel as the frame and fork allow.
It depends very much on your frame I suppose!

well i test fitted some 2nd hand Michelin Trackers not long before my accident. they fouled the gaurds
however I set them up for 28c tyres
If Im honest Ive lost my confidence since the accident.
today being a prime example where I went straight home when the rain kicked in :o
the thought of heavy snow tomorrow is a worryPosted 12 years ago # -
I had to take off the mudguard for 35mm Marathon Winters. I was just about to put the normal rubber back on again but perhaps I'll leave it a day or two.

well Ive had a fiddle
I think I can just sneak them on with whats left on the struts
looks like I may have to trim/remove one of the legs on the rear bridge
quite a tight design on the Boardman
will have to wait till my boys asleep
Im up at 0230 :(Posted 12 years ago # -
Cold, driving snow, sleet and rain and a very strong wind against made for a testing commute. Now for shower :)

Well done.
I bet a lot of people won't today!

Currently 1.3C at the sleety windy summit of EH10. Grotty weather and probably ok for regular tyres, but I might take my winter bike to avoid spoiling my usual ride.

No snow in Gorgie at 7:30 but a nasty headwind on the way to Haymarket. Wet snow in Livingston.

On The Busses again!

I drove today (first time for ages), it was very stressful on account of the idiotic, reckless and dangerous moves by other drivers.
Undertaking me on the west approach road (at approx 70mph!), overtaking me on the broomhouse roundabout followed by a cut up on the exit.
Truly, truly dreadful and rather glad I wasnt on the bike (obviously wouldnt have been on WAR if cycling....).
Perhaps an eye opener that its not just bikes that are treated badly by the idiots out there - or perhaps it was just 'the weather'.

That was brutal, never got a decent cadence once ground the whole way in. Nearly had a heart attack going up Henderson tce, never been so glad to see a red light!

Well done, meteorologists. At first I thought it would be mere rain with extra wind but just as I headed past the RCP after a wind-assist up past the crags it went all nice and snowy.

I hadn't expected a tailwind this morning as I watched the wind whipping about the garden. So nasty was it that the chickens were staying in the hen house rather than venturing out to the run. And the cat had one look outside before looking at me accusingly for causing the awful weather.
There is definitely definitely a worsening of general driving standards when the weather is like this. I got passed closer more often than yesterday, and had one horrible moment getting left-hooked. In this swirling wet weather it's just utterly stupid.

"There is definitely definitely a worsening of general driving standards when the weather is like this."
One reason is presumably because some drivers normally take the bus (or even cycle!)(?)

@Anth I had the same Tailwind all the way to Lothian Road (the buildings there seem to reverse the wind conditions no matter what?!).
I chose to cycle across the meadows so didnt have to deal with too much traffic apart from the two bus incidents http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=5977

Arghhh!!! (forgot gloves!)
No tailwind for me (from Gorgie to George Square). Glad my office is warm.

sleet. headwind. blown into kerb on Gilmore place. VILE. VILE. VILE. Fingers frozen despite heavy winter gloves. arrived at work covered in driven snow. Worst cycle to work ever. thank goodness it was short.

Funnily enough I had long fingered gloves in the bag, but stuck with fingerless, and hands warmed up climbing the Royal Mile. Obviously I wasn't pounding into a headwind and for the return the long fingers will be employed.
@ARobComp, you're right, there are certain places that the layout of the buildings seems to reverse wind flow. Always catches you off guard until you start to learn the places it'll happen.

@SRD - Maybe it's just macho masochism, but I acquire a certain satisfaction during, and mostly after, I defrost...
Perhaps that warm glow will arrive once your fingers thaw!

@anth - The Lothian Road one is incredible sometimes - Although going home it's the first part of my cycle. If I struggle up against the wind on Lothian road I know the rest of the way will be super fast!
Gloves I could only find two full fingered left hand gloves - therefore I wore one on the wrong hand! Score.

@roibeard No. I just feel tired and hungry. shower helped though. maybe coffee and cereal will too.
Posted 12 years ago # -
I'm with Roibeard, there's a certain perverse pleasure in battling through the elements, and that first coffee afterwards you can feel the warmth filtering down.
Though at the moment I'm not entirely looking forward to the ride home after a quick galnce outside.

I've served my penance this morning, this evening I am lofted home on a tail wind of glory! (though probably still soaked to the core...)
Posted 12 years ago # -
@anth & @Roibeard you're probably right. my crappy mood has more to do with lack of sleep last night and workload to get through today. plus guilt at going to work while kids on holiday. but weather could not be worse.
Posted 12 years ago # -
@SRD - oh the weather is awful, don't get me wrong. I'd probably be thinking a little different today if it had been a headwind this morning!
