Can anyone please give me some advice? I will be in Fort William on holiday next week. Is it possible to hire bikes there? Are there any recommendable off-road leisurely trails?

They are good shop in middle of town. Repaired a wheel overnight for a friend last year. Booked at 5.30 and back 9 next day. Lightweight 20" rim and they cut spoke to length.
Routes Best bet is maybe to head down towards canal and small roads round there. Canal path? Maybe shop has links.

There is a section of cycle-path alongside the main road North (the A82) as far as Torlundy. It then cuts through to the bottom of Nevis Range, where there are lots more marked - and unmarked - trails of all abilities through Leanachan Forest.
Follow the Great Glen Way all the way to Corpach and then up the canal. You can get to Gairlochy simply enough. If feeling spritely, you can take the B8005 to Clunes and pop along the Mile Dorcha to see the lovely falls at Eas Chia-aig (where part of the Rob Roy film was shot).
The road along Glen Nevis is perfectly suitable for cycling, with little traffic. There are more lovely falls along here at Polldubh. Heading up to the end of the road leaves you with a short walk into Nevis Gorge and the Steall Falls.
The West Highland way can be used in conjunction with the small road to Lundavra for a circuit, though there are some steps which will require a carry at one point.

For the record:
LaidBack - the shop was really helpful. There's another one in the Leanachan Forest at the Aonoch Mor Centre though you have to get there early to hire the smaller 24" and 20" wheeled bikes. The canal path is part of the Great Glen Way and suitable for bikes.
druidh - impressive recommendations. I cycled round to the Mile Dorcha after some heavy rain and the falls were spectacular. The whole Mile Dorcha is weird - the trees and walls are covered in a thick layer of moss. The continuation along Lock Arkaig is a bit of a roller-coaster. And +5 for Glen Nevis. The girls loved it - especially the vertiginous path.
I took my road bike which was a bit like taking a knife to a gun fight. The area is very bike friendly and there's a huge amount to do on a mountain bike. The options are more limited on a road bike. There's also a prominent ghost-bike at the north end of the town.Posted 14 years ago # -

Thanks for feedback.
The ghost bike may well be for Jason MacIntyre, a top road cyclist killed by a Highland Council van in Jan 2008.
Jason MacIntyre. Not forgotten.Anth at Work answered the public (calmly!) on a radio programme related to this hosted by Lesley Riddoch.
Family seek answers
"Solicitor Anna Watt, representing the council, told the Inquiry that the victim, who had been wearing a blue Scotland vest over a winter training jacket, could have taken the reasonable precaution of wearing clothing that would have made him more visible to other road users, and that “no reasonable precautions could have been taken by Highland Council which could have resulted in this accident being prevented."This case could start a whole new thread.
