Beware Causewayside / Mayfield Road

The street known variously as Causewayside, Ratcliffe Terrace and Mayfield Road is full of roadworks, especially at the National Library of Scotland crossroads with Grange Road. A lot of the roadworks involve the road being narrowed until it's just about wide enough for a car or a bus. There's no provision here for cyclists, that would be daft as this is only the city's number one quality cycle corridor, nothing important then.
What I'm trying to say is AVOID this road, AVOID AVOID AVOID; if you cower at the side of the road you'll be squashed and terrified, and if you "man up" and "take your space" and all the rest of it you'll gather a queue of angry evolutionary throwbacks behind you, shouting helpful comments such as "cking road!".

It's back to the slow quiet roads of the Grange for me, rain or no rain.

It's gasworks and if the length of time it took them to do the work on the Dalkeith Road, Salisbury Place, but more particularly Salisbury Road encroaching onto Minto Street, is anything to go by, then expect it to be like this a long while. I was going to turn left into Relugas Road just before it, but I was doing a recce for a route for the POP. I expect that they will still be there on 28th April so will probably take the turn as previously mentioned. Also Findhorn Place is shut for roadworks with no access beyond Seton Place. As you say cc the space left for traffic is barely wide enough for one car on Mayfield Road, I would imagine large vans will probably not be able to use it and certainly not lorries. I see they have patched some large bits of Relugas Road at the start of it, however, they need to do the rest of it, it really is a very uncomfortable ride and the speed bumps are lethal their condition is so poor with potholes in the sides of them. It is all a bit of a mess!!

True, Relugas Road is a mess too. At least it's slower and quieter, and so jammed up with parked cars and speed bumps that it's not thronged with motor traffic. My best shot at a quiet route avoiding the awful QBC-to-be is this:

    click for map

... and thence across the Meadows.

Incidentally, instead of the above route, Cyclestreets came up with a fairly eccentric route, involving minor paths in the Meadows, walking across roads and up and down steps, and spurning the MMW cycle path in favour of the bumpiest cobbles I know of:

@cc true. I think your route will be the one that I use for the POP. Lauder Road is fantastically wide and although uphill, and that it does have buses going up and down it, it is actually a pleasure to ride, and I love looking at the huge houses on either side, some of which are like follies almost.

I may well see you there then on the 28th!

With regard to Cyclestreets, I was only yesterday talking about it and asking whether it had the facility to change or drag the route marked, and sadly it appears it does not. I use Bike Toaster, a friend uses Go Pedal, or even Google maps does. I just have to work out now how to download them onto a Mac in GPX!!

Due to the roadworks it's quite pleasant to go east through Salisbury Place to Grange Road, now that Salisbury Road has been re-opened. A short walk beside the barriers next to the library, a hop across the road and you can then get almost all the way to the lights at the top of Marchmont Road before cars start reappearing.

The Salisbury/Grange junction is now open, but has one of the worst surface in the city. FixMyStreeted in case they were going to try and pain some new lines over it when they do that bit of the KB2CCQBC.

I've just passed this on the bus. That is a beautiful pristine surface they're digging holes in, only tarmaced a year or so ago.
