This Sunday (15th April) the Falcons start their home Northern League
campaign with fixtures against teams from Yorkshire and Lancashire.
First up at 2pm is an A team match against Heckmondwike.  The
Yorkshire visitors have shown a great improvement recently after
several years struggling for rider numbers.  With the Falcons missing
two of their top point scorers the match is sure to be tightly
contested and may go all the way to a last heat decider.

2nd match of the day is a B team fixture against Astley & Tyldelsey.
The former mining towns in Lancashire have produced many great riders
over the years and are only running with a B team in the Northern
League as they continue to produce stars of the future.  The Falcons B
team are on a high after their away victory at Hull in the first match
of the season and will be going all out to make home advantage count.

I thought it was you! Black Altura/Endura jacket?

We (me plus son and daughter) were behind you, next to the kids' playground.

Grand afternoon out, if a tad chilly!

The Edinburgh Falcons got their home Northern League campaign off to a winning start today with a comfortable victory over the visitors from Heckmondwike by 86 points to 63.  With six out of the eight man home team reaching double figures this strength in depth proved too much for Heckmondwike.

In the B team fixture against Astley & Tyldesley the home side had another victory by 86 points to 64.  Again for the home side, scoring was spread throughout the team with perhaps Michael Lee being a standout with four victories from four outings.  For Astley & Tyldesley Reece Pollitt and Adam Phillips both reached 17 points from five rides.

In today’s Junior Challenge Match, which was run over six heats, Edinburgh were defeated by Heckmondwike by 32 points to 28.

Both visiting teams had one female rider each.

One even had father and daughter together in some races.

Edinburgh had the oldest rider (69).

The Falcons want some female riders (of any age).

It's only four laps, how hard can that be? (Ask anth...)

Not just anth: I'm sure I saw Tommy wandering around the office with his arm in a cast in 2006ish, unless that was derived from something other than cycle speedway.

Great shot of cycle speedway race at Davidson's Mains in 1967.

Wingpig, suspect you could be right. One of my best friends has known Tommy and Gavin since school, and he has never been tempted to compete - despite much badgering !!

From the link, in 1970 looks like cycling speedway was popular with tracks in many parks including Harrison park

"Cycle Speedway is still going on in Edinburgh, but on a vastly reduced scale. In the 1960s there were 3 divisions and dozens of tracks. Now there is just one at Redbraes Park and I don't think they have all that many matches in a year.

It's certainly nothing like we had before. We would race at least twice a week from March to November, and would travel down south for national matches several time during the year.

It kept us all out of trouble - and pretty fit too!"

"Cycle Speedway is still going on in Edinburgh, but on a vastly reduced scale."

Never likely to be on scale it once was ever again.

BUT the recent initiative by the Falcons of indoor races at the Jack Kane for secondary schools has been successful and they hope to involve more schools this year.

There is to be an even session on Thursday at Redbraes.

    Details to come.
