I also own a dog, let it off it's lead sometimes too. I'd say that makes me WORSE than a driver (only when I'm not driving though) ;)

It looks like the URL http://www.citycyclingwhenNOTdrivingedinburgh.info isn't occupied yet.

Like yesterday's "if you go down a bus-only lane in the middle of the forest when there are no polis around" thread, there's an element of trees-falling-in-forests* about the whole "with which highway-using group do I most identify myself as belonging to when travelling on roads?" question. Travelling primarily by cycle and feet, I bear both in mind when (grudgingly and fearfully) propelling myself in a motor vehicle.

*Yes, it does. Unless it's a tree in a forest in the near-total vacuum of deep space and you're being picky about defining 'sound' as being transmitted specifically through the air.

    I really don't get the hooha about a 20 mph zone(s)
    in town,really whats the difference
accelerate to 30,stop at the lights, sit in traffic etc etc
20 might actually smooth some traffic flows out

    why the p*ss taking ?
If we got organised we could have huge swathes of town car free, do you want that or not ?
    Would it be safer ?
    Would it be more pleasant?
    Would it be ethical ?
Would it promote sustainable transport ?

Or are you just a bunch of "buddies" , who p*ss take newcomers ?

One of the reasons why cycling is not more popular in the UK is the 'Us & Them' mentality. On the continent cycling is just a thing normal people do. In this country there is a perception that riding a bike is the preserve of intolerant car-hating eco-fascists. (Thank heavens there aren't any of those sort on this forum.) This is why a lot of 'car drivers' hate 'cyclists'. Attempting to force cycling down people's throats is never going to increase the number of people you see out on a bike.

  9. Are you coming on the Pedal on Parliament ride Freewheelin?

I think, when new to a particular group, there is always a chance the lighthearted banter can be taken the wrong way. Equally, telling people off in your first few posts is always unlikely to go down terribly well, especially if there's a blanket assumption that someone is leading their life incorrectly merely because they happen to own a car and yet still have the gall to call themselves 'cyclists'.

I'd say darkly cyncial realists, rather than buddies.

In fact I can't stand most of em, seem to keep meeting them in cafes that sell cinnamon buns.

As for the piss taking, well yeah we aren't very nice to newcomers generally, I mean jeez how can we consider ourselves a put-upon-out-group if we welcome people in.

    I mean, really.

I mean, I'm taking the piss out of myself right now for being unable to spell cyncial. Despite apparently writing for a living.

Don't want to see what NOB would spra...

actually, no, lets not go there, even 80s channel 4 wasn't that progressive.

  15. I dunno. The Word did some fairly extravagantly gross-out stuff... (which meant, as a teenage boy, I naturally always watched)

  16. "Attempting to force cycling down people's throats is never going to increase in the number of people you see out on a bike."

I misread that as 'bicycle' rather than 'cycling' initially and thought we really were going to extremes.

People don't like being 'told' what to do, you're absolutely right. It gets written off as 'nanny state' or whatever - even more so when it's something which would be of benefit to them. Which is just crazy.

    Free - serious answers then:

    1. If we got organised we could have huge swathes of town car free, do you want that or not ?

I don't agree. I think some areas would benefit from pedestrianisation, I would like to see far less traffic and consider this a realistic goal. Making huge swathes of the town car free is fanciful and I can't say that I would support this as I don't see the benefit.

    2. Would it be safer ?

Slightly perhaps, but at the cost of considerable inconvenience for many people and businesses.

    3. Would it be more pleasant?

I agree that cars and congestion are sopmething of a blight on the urban environment. However, some minor changes could help alleviate this and at far less cost to some people who do rely on cars.

    4. Would it be ethical ?

Is your mode of transport an ethical issue - assuming that if someone in the UK doesn't burn the fossil fuel then someone else is going to do it.

    5. Would it promote sustainable transport ?

No - it may force people to walk, cycle or take the bus but I hardly consider that "promotion".

    Posted 13 years ago #
  20. Pity. With 1000 other cyclists there it kinda fits your request to get organised and make things safer, more pleasant, more ethical and promote sustainable transport.

Would be nice if you wanted to reconsider.

Have I mentioned to people that I'm getting a megaphone yet?

    I. Have. The. Power.

It doesn't affect the acronym but I though the correct term for persons of Tynish persuasion was 'Novacastrian'?

  23. "Is your mode of transport an ethical issue - assuming that if someone in the UK doesn't busn the fossil fuel then someone else is going to do it."

Oi! My bikes are knitted from sustainable dust by Tibetan refugees paid a living wage so they can save up to buy back their country and transported on the backs of Himalayan snails fed on tofu to leave a zero carbon footprint.

I have to order them 32 years in advance. But it's worth it.

Yeah, but I thought that might go over all your heads, given the deep disdain with which I hold all you non-buddies.
