Ride on 19th May?

  1. Why the 19th of May? Well that's Scottish Cup Final day (between Hearts and Hibs), and despite the campaign to move the match to Murrayfield there's virtually no chance of that happening. So the Edinburgh streets might be a bit quieter than normal. I'm pondering a 50 odd mile route entirely within the confines of the city (been thinking about a 'Roond Aboot Reekie' audax along these lines for next season) if anyone fancies joining me.

    :)

I'd be game for taking in the 12 hills, but a gentler longer route sounds good too.

Yeah I think I'm in for that. "How far can you go without ever leaving the city?". Could take in the whole of the RR route around the city, do the length of the shore from Cramond to Porty and then work back into city in a sort of spiral manner?

    Should be doable. I'll ask.
Most of the RR round Frogston was quite unpleasant towards the back end of last year.

  5. I'll plot a route and post it here.

I'd prefer to be outside the city in the clear country air, with traffic free (virtually) roads.

I'll have a look at the route though to see how rural it actually is.

    But DaveC, this is CityCyclingEdinburgh

To comply with DaveC's preference (and mine), we could have a ride just outside the urban area. It might be a bit tricky to the north and to the south we would have to deal with the Pentlands.

  10. It won't be rural - it's something I've fancied for a while to satisfy my own curiosity of the 'do-ability' whilst tagging in some areas of the city, and taking advantage of what might be quieter roads than normal (though not on a par with times like Christmas Day).

Essentially I'm going out on the route, if anyone wants to join me they can :P

Cities are fascinating places to ride around in their own rights. Loads to see and notice and learn.

Probably not - depends on where I want to go and what I want to see.

"Cities are fascinating places to ride around in their own rights. Loads to see and notice and learn"

That was my thinking. Most routes focus on outside the cities, taking in the views and the expanse. I'm intrigued as to what 50 miles (or more) would feel like in an urban environment, and what little routes, nooks and crannies I can find along the way. Plus, I can route it via a couple of nice cafe stops and so on.

You could try an Edinburgh Saltire. criss cross the city from Balerno to Leith and from Cramond to Dalkeith? That should make up some of the required 50miles.

I'm a bit of a light-weight in this company, having a maximum distance of about 40-ish miles in a day.

Of course, if it were around Edinburgh, I could build in an escape route should I prove incapable...

    I've penciled it in!

Chdot. Are you suggesting we camp of offering points to visit?

    Confused of Fife.

Not really, I'm sure anth has ideas.

Just that this one is a useful refreshment stop he may or may not know.

A bit off road and near the RR - without going on it.

This sounds like a really nice/good idea. I have lived in Edinburgh for 20 years, but still feel like I do not know it that well. Everyone on here is so knowledgeable I could learn loads.
Like Roibeard I would be a concerned at being a bit of a lightweight - not the distance, but perhaps the speed. How fast do you think you'd go around? I know from previous threads that anth for example cruises at a higher speed than I am used to. I guess I could point out interesting wildlife if I'm flagging and catch a breath when everyone stops to take photos? (actually I hardly ever notice anything, it's my wife who has an eye for that).
One thing I am now very strong on is coffee and cake stops - after a fortnights holiday cycling around Edin with my wife; she likes to stop 3 or 4 times a day!

What about something themed, like the best statues in Edinburgh?? [okay I may have a little too excited there ;) ]

"after a fortnights holiday cycling around Edin"

    Does should not compute.

Sorry, love cycling, but there will be only two places to be on the 19th, Hampden Park @ 3pm, Gorgie Road @ 6ish(result depending), but enjoy your ride.

It probably shouldn't compute, but whilst I know how to get about, there's plenty that I'm ignorant of! For example, I didn't know that John Napier was born in Merchiston Tower until last week.

"there's plenty that I'm ignorant of!"

    I know what you mean!

Edinburgh has a million histories - and it's possible to construct 'tours' based on all sorts of different things.

Castles (there are more than two). Literary figures - RLS is associated with quite a few places. Police Boxes. 80 odd mills (mostly on the WoL). Watercourses. Architecture - periods, styles, architects (try Gowans). Women. Chimneys. Geology. Railways. Sculpture. Villages. Wildlife. Etc. etc.

Of course anything involving anth/CCE will cover most of these...

    you forgot cafés...

Perhaps Anth publishes a route and we each have to research some facts / places of interest to visit along it? We could do a public googlemap to allow the planning.

Or perhaps it's an Audax in the traditional sense, led by a captain, and we just go where we're told ;)

I did once plan on doing another "follow the tram" route to photograph all the p***-poor diversions and ripped up infrastructure, but perhaps we want a more positive theme to the day?

    "Don't care where it goes"

Could be like orienteering - with different trails for different interests/staminas, but common Control Points (cafés).

    " Could be like orienteering"

Perhaps using Strava or some other phone based GPS tracker thingumybob?

Could Anth be the anneka rice for the 21st century?

I'll start sourcing blue jumpsuits and cameramen who like staring fixedly at Anth's bum...
