You are all fairly erudite professional people (and this is a significantly more private forum than t' witter) so I was wondering about a bit of off topic career advice.

I've been made a solidly offer of one job in Wellington. Which looks interesting, is reasonably well paid and doesn't look like it would be too stressful. Is a step sideways though, and the job title is going back to Adviser from Manager (although I'm technically Communications and 'events manager')

Had an interview on Sunday night for a job that I had previously came a close second to an internal candidate and was basically told to 'keep applying' for roles there. One of the people that had interviewed me from the first panel was on this latest one too.

It also pays around $10k better and is a step up career wise, although would be quite a full-on stressful job. Should hear by the end of the week from them. (I happen to know there are no internal candidates going for this one.

So, in your personal, non-binding and non-qualified opinion, what do you think? Fudge the first suitor a bit to see what happens by the end of the week, or take a chance on bachelor number 2.

Bird in hand really better than one in bush? (no sniggering at the back)

i would think that telling them you'll let them know first thing next week would be adequate?

  3. I'd suggest that you're taking a big leap skipping the country, and that in itself may be a stressful process (although with your other half coming from there, and there being a common (ish) language, it won't be as bad as it could). On that basis a job you can ease yourself into quite easily would seem a sensible option (especially as it's a solid offer). Get settled, then move up.

Thing is, there will be someone along in a minute with the opposite, but equally compelling, advice... ;)

It seems reasonable to ask the first to wait until the end of the week. It is a big step you are taking and a reasonable employer would be - reasonable about it. Ask them and see what they say.

Yeah I'd take the less stressful job too but that's just me. ;-) Work to live.

Thanks folks, tres interessant. To put it into context, one is a training body for the aviation, tourism and travel sector. A T T T O if you want to google it (take out the spaces). The other one is the polis.

(amusingly enough for all you car haterz, I had an interview for the national transport agency in the highways development team :) )

When I say stressful, it would, I guess, be more live with constant issues being dealt with, and a bit closer to my journalism background. :S But the former one would be a fairly vibrant sector, and the stakeholders would be an interesting bunch (and with some major corporates like AirNZ)

Funnily I'm not too concerned about the settling bit. Wellington has always felt like a pair of comfy shoes, albeit a usually windy and occasionally shaky pair of comfy shoes.

Was a bit fraught last night, but once I'd seen the rather generous contract I stumped for suitor number one!

The fact it's number 8 finalist in the best places to work list, also helped. Can't imagine what it's like to work in best place to work kind of place.

But gave them a start date of 16 June, so the clock's ticking.

    Holy Heck.

Well I was going to say job 1 sounds best to me, as Min says - work life balance. Too late, congratulations and hope all goes well.

Gah, and there was an email from the polis this morning saying I was their preferred candidate. Jeeez. On balance though think I've made the right choice.
