I have an old style quil stem. I'm thinking of replacing the handle bars (well just thinking).

Has anyone any links I could look at for a replacement please?

I have a mate who works ate EBC who said they can order a Deda Speciale at £24 or a Cinelli Giro d'Italia for £52.

The problem is I have a Cotic with angled drop bars instead of the classic 'round' drops and I'm quite comfortable with this, so the 'classic' curves doesn't look as comfortable - but perhaps they are? Feel free to tell me why?

    Cheers

  2. Nitto Randonneur for me - the really wide ones (48cm I think), dead comfy (and I don't normally like drops). Tis what I've got on the X (you've got a quill stem on that?)

Assuming this is for your Dawes?

The "angled" drop bars you are referring to are ergonomic drops, which have flattened areas rather than a constant curve.

The "randonneur" bar is similar to ergonomic, but also flares out slightly sideyways, rather than droppins straight down. Have a nice old 3TTT one on my Audax bike in this style, very comfy.

Watch with modern bars though as often have oversized diameter which quill stem clamps normally don't.

On-One do a couple of designs that might prove interesting and are suitable for old school quill stems. Nitto stuff is lovely but about 3 or 4 times the price of On-One.

Nah Quill stem is on the Dawes as it from 2006. I want new handlebars but it won't take a new type as they are wider 31.7mm apparently in the centre.

You want a 25.4mm clamp probably. Or maybe a 26mm, if stem has Italian heritage but I assume that's less likely.

A google for 25.4mm drop bar turns up an anatomic pair at £19.99 from Zoom. There's some nice Salsa ones with quite long dropped section for £29.

Range of cool 3TTT stuff on Planet-X but it's all 26mm.

    31.8mm sometimes sold as "OS".

    Cheers anth and Kaputnik,

I've found these: and think I may get the third one:

    3ttt 4GX MEX

    3TTT Forgie OX

    3TTT Mutant in Black

    3TT Morpheus

    You can shim a 25.4mm bar into a 26mm clamp, but squeezing a 26mm bar into a 25.mm clamp might over-stress it.

I think I've a 3T THE bar in the shed. It's not been used much, 46cm, so quite wide. You can have it for nothing if you want it. Old school standard guage (the one before the latest wider one).

Face Palm, Thanks Tom, I should be receiving this one pretty soon as I ordered it yesterday. It was only 9.99 plus a couple of quid postage.

Cheers for the thought, I do appreciate it.

Multicoloured Swap Shop again at next PY anyone?
