This Thursday evening sees something of a landmark fixture at Redbraes Park as an Edinburgh Falcons Junior side takes on a Scottish Schools select.  This is the first time two sides drawn entirely from school pupils have raced in an official fixture at the track and it is hoped that further inter-schools racing will take place at Redbraes over the Summer months.

The Scottish Schools side has been selected by Scotland team manager Gavin Kennedy and is drawn from each of the three schools who competed so successfully in the recent schools indoor league at the Jack Kane Centre.  Competition winners Queen Anne High School from Dunfermline are represented by two of their highest points scorers, Joel Kelman and Harry Langdale, while the fast-starting Nathan Barrie represents Fife rivals Inverkeithing High School.  Liberton High School are represented by the quartet of riders who led them to the runners-up spot, Connor Garvey, Ben Wright, Ted Kanjewe and JP Mason.

The Edinburgh Falcons side will be led by two youngsters from Craigmount High School, Mark Lee and Dougie Morgan.  Both riders have posted some impressive scores for the Falcons Senior side recently and will be hoping for more of the same on Thursday.  The side is made up by St Mungo's High School pupil, Ewan Kennedy, and three pupils all of whom are still at primary school, Callum Cairney, Sean Hewitson and Paul Lee.

Tapes are up at 6pm and admission is, as always, free.

Edinburgh Falcons Juniors recorded a hard fought 84-68 victory over a Scottish Schools Select last night in what was something of a landmark fixture, it being the first ever official Junior match staged at the Redbraes Park track.

The Schools side, which was drawn from the three schools who had competed so successfully in the recent indoor league, took an early 10-9 lead after Ewan Kennedy shed a chain whilst leading heat 2.  However, three successive 6-4 heat advantages saw the Falcons race into a 27-22 lead.  A well-worked 7-3 from Mark Lee and Paul Lee in heat 7 increased that gap to 9 points at the interval.

Liberton's Ben Wright took the first heat win for the Schools side in heat 9 to reduce the deficit to 5, however a 7-3 in heat 10 courtesy of Mark Lee and Callum Cairney saw the Falcons restore their 9 point lead.  Thereafter, the Falcons greater experience and fitness began to tell, however a fantastic win for Liberton's Connor Garvey in the closing stages ensured that the final margin of victory was just 16 points.

For the Schools side, Queen Anne's Joel Kelman and Harry Langdale rode exceptionally well on what was their first look at an outdoor track, while Liberton's Ted Kanjewe battled gamely for his 8 point haul.

The Falcons heat-leader trio of Mark Lee, Dougie Morgan and Ewan Kennedy were in superb form, with Morgan notching a maximum.  Lee and Kennedy recorded a further 8 paid wins between them and only a bike failure and an exclusion prevented them from scoring maximums.  Star of the show, however, was youngster Paul Lee who exhibited an incredible turn of speed and showed great bravery against much older opponents in racing to his best ever score.

All in all, it was a great evening's entertainment which highlighted the depth of talent that now exists north of the border.
