So, thinking the move might make me move from being a pure commuter to doing something a bit roadier as well (and will be joining the bendy bar gang)

From the clubbers here, how do you go about going into a club at the first rung? Is it best to get some road experience before you start going on group rides, or do most clubs let you start from a 'well, you can make the wheels go round' level.

Aside from a bit of commuter drafting (someone sat behind my childseat in a headwind for *ages* the other day there, must have been an amazing windbreak) I've no experience with group riding.

ERC has a first-timers group ride at 9.50 on Sats. They teach group skills at that. Realistically you need to be able to cycle at 16-17mph for 30-40 miles. You'd learn to chaingang - this is tighter and more intense than the methods used by the groups below but would put you in good stead.

Portovelo also does a shorter group ride suitable for beginners on Sundays.

CTC rides are quite a bit slower.

    Aren't you off soon?

I have recent experience of having no experience.

What I did was go out solo a few times, adding 5-10 miles each time, until I'd overshot the distance and speed intended for the shorter and more social group rides. That meant I had enough spare puff left to concentrate on the few new things you learn in a bunch - the signals and etiquette and such.

If you're not too busy and are already a shade above the ~16mph for 30 miles range, then I recommend Portovelo; they're a lovely gaggle of boys and girls.

Thanks chaps, it's in wgtn I'm planning to take it up (if family/time/weird hankering to rejoin the filmsociety allows).

At the 15-20mph on my steel commuter for 10 miles each way (sometimes with a childseat/child) level, so think on a lighter bike I'd probably be in reasonably good stead on a social ride. Actually says a lot about my like of cycling that I'd be willing to trade off two reeled pursuits to take up the two wheeled variety.

A few hoons roond the bays will hopefully get my legs used to it.
