I'm never sure which forum to put these things in but it's a question so ...

We (cycling Dumfries, which is basically me) have been approached by the Eden Festival (near Moffat) to see if we wanted to do something bikey during the festival. They were wondering about whether people might like to cycle to and from the festival and the station. This is easy enough from Lockerbie but a bit of a b*r from Dumfries, so I thought we might either offer guided rides (well A guided ride) or at the least a route for people to follow.

The question is - do you think anyone would actually be up for doing this? It means lugging camping equipment on the bike as well as doing battle with the delights of booking your bike on the train. I'm not really a festival goer or much of a camper so I can't really tell whether this is something there'll be much call for, but I thought CCE would be the place to ask ... not particularly whether any of you are planning on doing it yourselves - but if you were to go to the Eden festival (or any other festival that was 14-odd miles from a station) would you go by train + bike, or train + bus (and good luck with that one) or just say sod it and go by car like a normal person? If we can find a nice route it's likely to be a pleasant summer evening ride - but not for someone who's cycling experience up to then has been in the malarial flatlands of London (as I discovered when I took my friend out for short 5.5 mile run down to the shop and he had to walk up the first hill of about 17...)

I think some of the English music festivals had a cycle option, with a van laid on for luggage. Naturally the EEN-style commentators criticised them, crying foul on the green front since fuel had been used...

I cut my teeth on this forum a coupe years ago with this very subject, having just cycled there n back from Edinburgh. It was a stunning ride and actually faster on the way back despite the high winds, 3 days of staying up late and dancing must have been good for me!

I am contemplating going again and would be happy for company, its not that bad a ride but does have a very long easy climb, and by long i mean about 17 miles of climbing, after a while it feels like cycling through toffee, you start looking for punctures..

The view over the beeftub is worth it tho and the decent into Moffat is high speed. Moffat to the site itself is no bother, I even went for extra beer and food on the Saturday as a recovery ride, tho did maybe think that was pushing it!

The festival itself is lovely family friendly affair, hippies and fluff and great live music. Smugglers!

On the same subject it looks like I will be riding to http://www.knockengorroch.org.uk/ at the end of the month, probably over 2 days with the truck. I dont like any of the routes here but something south of the fastest route option will provide some stunning scenery.

ohh, summer, how I missed you!

we would do that, if the bikes could go on the train, but since that is impossible...
