resolvedThinking about getting the SKS Airgun or PDW Shin Object for single speed use mainly while on the road (minimalist bike, minimalist pump).
Anyone got one? Is it any good? Alternative recommendations? Not looking to break the bank so something that takes standard cartridges ideal
I wonder if I still have those random CO2 cartridges going spare? Or are they still lurking somewhere in Peter's Yard?
Have to say my experience of gas inflators was you still have to carry a pump anyway.
Aye. You need a pump. They're best for squeezing more in to effortlessly get the tyres brick hard. I'm sure if you get one that takes threadless cartridges you can use Soda Stream ones that are cheaper on eBay.
I think I have one of these although it's been in my bag unused (touch wood) for so long that I can't remember. But something that won't freeze to your fingers is good.
Hmm. As I have a pump peg behind the head tube, maybe I should just get an old style frame pump instead? No cartridges, just lots of sweating and cursing.... ;-)
I'm sure I've got one of the little valves hanging around in the garage that you can have. Add a cartridge and stick it in your bag. It's worth having for that day when you're too far from home to face limping back on a squidgy tyre.
I dont carry a pump, only gas, works well IMO.
Having said that, I agree with the 'get decent tyres, dont get many punctures' school of thought. Based on that, I still have a drawer full of canisters !!
I got a sale deal on one of the EBC valves (included a sleeve for hand freeze).
Canisters are ludicrously expensive in bike shops, but cheap from tyreinflators £20 for 50
I've got 23mm Gatorskins on the single speed, which is about as p******* resistant as I can go - don't think Marathon Plus comes in that size. So wanted to have a way of inflating the spare tube just in case. The idea of a 'classic' frame fit tube (Zefal HPX or even an old school one with a hose), backed up with CO2 to get the tyres rock hard (tucked into the zipped roll under the saddle) certainly appeals.
Thanks for the advice, folks. I'll keep this thread 'unresolved' today just in case anyone has strong feelings on the subject of frame pumps (which one?) or CO2 inflators.
I really like my CO2 inflater! I've had my Genuine Innovations Ultraflate Plus one for 10? years. Just carry the inflater, 2 tubes, and 2 CO2 canisters in my little saddle bag.
If you get a p*******, just change the tube and pull the trigger, takes an effortless 4 or 5 seconds to inflate the tube.
I like my gas cylinder too - I tend only to use it if I'm in a realy hurry otherwise I can get enough in with the wee frame mounted pump I got from Alpine to get me home where I can inflate fully with the track pump.
Tip - wear gloves, I used mine wearing latex gloves to keep my hands clean, was glad I did as the cylinder froze to them.
Picked up a wee CO2 pump from fleaBay, arrived today. Has a foam grip that fits around the cartridge to prevent finger/palm freeze. Should do he job. Ordered a pack of spare cartridges too.
Still hankering after a frame pump too, to complete the retro look and start off the infklation of the tyres. I find that presta valves can be a b*gger to get going sometimes: don't want to waste all my CO2 on a tricksy valve. Tricky getting the right size of frame pump for a reasonable price. Working on it...
Having not used it at all, I've now had to use mine twice - yesterday and today. Brilliant. One skoosh and the tyre's brick hard. But get thee to Tyre Inflators (see Nelly's link above). Having used my one cartridge yesterday I popped to Evans and bought a box of 2 for £4.99. Just bought 50 from TI for £20.
@Insto - funny thing is, I did think 'ah the TI ones will be some cheap copies' - but no, they were exact same as the bike shop ones, down to the serial numbers!
Some mark up, eh?
I can't decide if it's a ridiculous mark-up or not. Display packaging, boxing up, staff time ordering, displaying, restocking, selling etc. All mounts up. Presumably when shops do half price sales they're shifting stock at cost price just to clear their warehouses and stock rooms so I guess not. TI will be relying on low overheads, buying in more cheaply and shifting high volumes on low mark-up. And they're adding 25% for transit, which is already contained in the shop price. Hmm. I guess not then.
Thinking about it, it's probably people like Wiggle and CRC that have ridiculous mark-ups. They'll be buying very cheap and have low overheads but their prices are only lower, not generally half the price, of shops.
