That there DdF of Spokes is quoted in the Scotsman almost as much as the bloke from the Institute of Advanced Motorists these days.

Silyl Scotsman. Cycling got sexy(dare I say it: sexarh) a year ago.
In related news, I think I've just had or am about to have my one year anniversary of bike.

Between your Captain Caveman and Victoria's, well, Victoria, bikesexy's just about wrapped up.

Sadly cycling being sexy is a long way from cyclists being sexy... :P
Is that 7% share figure for Edinburgh correct? Certainly on days like this it seems a touch on the high side.

maybe something in the middle? just for fun.
Posted 12 years ago # -
@anth, i believe there's a 2% confidence interval attached to the 7%

Depends how you define it. My network's down so I can't check but if I take 'cyclist' as someone who usually cycles to work or regularly uses a bike as an alternative mode to get to work or (most loosely) has participated in cycling one at least one occasion in the previous 28 days, 7% is a bit low. It depends how bad ass you want to be in calling someone a 'cyclist'.

"Sadly cycling being sexy is a long way from cyclists being sexy..."
Perhaps if cycle paths had more smooth humps and curves (rather than the skin problems many have at the moment), or if bicycles were dressed in skimpy clothing. Jiggle.co.uk is available.

okay, okay,. just reacting to the jargon that (sometimes) appears on here.
what that means is that the 7% is based on not great data (household surveys?), and that it is probably accurate to plus/minus 2%, so it might be 9%, it might be 5%, but it is quite reliably somewhere between those two.

I guess I'm basing this on 'do I see one cyclist for every 14 cars' when I'm commuting. Which is a little unfair because I'm usually passing the cars, but generally going the same pace as cyclists.
Need a nice morning to do one of my 'stand on a stret corner photographing every cyclist and extrapolating the results of what they're wearing and cycling and the colour of their hair' things again. I can factor in a car count at the same time. Might be interesting to note the single occupancy rate.
'Confidence interval' is waaaaaaaay beyond my ken, I'm not going to even pretend to know what that's about.

@SRD
Not great! That data's a national statistic (and it's mine).Posted 12 years ago # -
Perhaps we could hijack a coffee morning for some Fun With Maffs? Instead of a barge or Yard, we get takeaway from somewhere central and take it in turns to count wheels until eyes glaze over and someone takes a turn at the front.

Maths is (are?) sexy?
Posted 12 years ago # -
Hmm. This sort of counting is beyond the ability of hand-held mechanical clickers, even with multiple people. However, with touchscreen technology and the Android app builder or Googledocs it should be possible to whip up a wee thingby for quick tap-counting of various things with multiple parameters, such as vehicle type, vehicle operator gender, number of passengers, vehicle operator headwear status, lateral pannier-mounting distribution and so on...

oops! sorry insto! I thought it was you who had previously explained/disparaged it!

*splutters at wingpig's technobabble*
What sorcery is this? I was just going to arrange a cunning Greek to put out my eye with a stake and then count the cars as they passed under my hand. Not falling for his 'tie yourself under the chassis' trick this time, though.

Or just film the junction for a while and count later with the aid of the pause button.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Damn your female practicality!
Posted 12 years ago # -
Don't worry, Anth, we can rescue this. Observe:
Ooh, I've an idea. Why don't we film the junction for a representative length of time and use freeze frame to count accurately at leisure?

Uberuce, that is genius. See, that's male lateral thinking that is, the type of thing that saw the lightbulb invented.

Still need to transmute the data from the screen to some sort of electronic data-storage and manipulation facility. What about a touchy-pressy-tappy smartphone app or Google document data-entry form thing?
Posted 12 years ago # -
Finally, the network is back. How the numbers build for Edinburgh:
Usually cycles to work / ed - 4.5% (CI approx +/- 1.1%)
Above or regular cycles as alternative to usual mode - 5.8% (+/-1.2%)
Either above or has cycled in past 28 days - 12.1% (+/-1.7%)Posted 12 years ago # -
Hang on a minute, I've had another flash here, we could build an app that works with one of these touchscreen things, and use it in automatic conjunction with something like Google document data-entry.
Uberuce, you and me bud, we've got this thing sussed...
