Yes, well Salmond was on the telly talking about ashmageddon yesterday and stated that what we needed to do when the airspace is open again is 'get the maximum number of flights in the air as possible'.

@anth
you forget...
motorists = voters
air travel = economic development
Has anyone done the figures on
'Value of inward investment/extra exports due to businesspersons flying in' minus 'balance of tourist expenditure abroad minus foreign tourism spending here'?

Well, yes, there is a difference between a planned change in transport and an emergency shut down.

Anyone else at the EUSA/ Edinburgh south hustings? (there were a few other non-students in cycling kit). No mention of cycling, although some of transport generally (trams, forth road bridge, heathrow runways) and a fair bit on the environment.
On trams (and edinburgh traffic more generally), Fred Macintosh (libdem) made argument that 'we are building city size of falkirk at bottom of Leith walk' and that we need more than buses to provide transport. Also that we need to be a competitive, growing city, but that 'perhaps it could have been done better'. Good defence of an unpopular policy, put in context of what transport does for a city. But most debate curtailed by chair, who suggested that it wasn't a 'westminster topic'. Which was sort of a pity, but probably a good move, because question asked in quite a single issue way, when most questions allowed for a more general discussion, which worked better.
Have to say that all the candidates spoke well and thoughtfully. Not much cheap-point scoring (except for some attacks on the student union politics, which was interesting).
