Until recently I lived very close to Redbraes and loved watching the speedway on the occasions I managed to get along there. If you are the type of person that enjoys watching sport you can't fail to enjoy watching cycle speedway. Hard-fought, frantic, high speed, up-close action; lots of tumbles, bumps and bruises. These guys are impressive athletes and master tacticians. Almost all of the matches there are Scotland v England affairs if that aspect floats your boat. Even if you don't have the whole afternoon to spare drop in for half an hour or so and check it out. Nothing better on a sunny day than taking a break from a ride and sitting on the grass bank for a bit watching the racing.

  3. And you might get to see someone break their arm... ;)

Full-on contact sport, great for photo ops as well. It's been too long since I've been down. But I'll always carry my scars of participation!

The Falcons faced Sheffield today (13th May) in a full days racing programme at Redbraes Park.

In very blustery conditions the Falcons 2nd team started proceedings and faced up to the first of the Sheffield 2nd teams (The Rockets) in the Northern Combination League.   The Falcons running out comfortable winners by 98 points to 52.

The 2nd match of the day, and the days main event, witnessed a very competitive Northern League fixture between the Falcons and Sheffield first teams.  After a first heat advantage to the home side after a starting infringement from Sheffield’s Louis German, the Falcons built a steady lead throughout the whole 18 heats to win by 92 points to 83.  The stand out for Sheffield was Aiden Owen who had good support from Liam Webster and Kyle Holland.  For Edinburgh Mikey Hewitson raced unbeaten in the four races he finished with his other being an exclusion whilst up against Aiden Owen.  Craig Newsome also raced to three victories as he collected 18 points and a bonus.

Next up was a junior challenge which was run over a six heat format with three riders in each team.  Again another victory for the Falcons winning by 37 points to 23.

As weather conditions deteriorated the last fixture of the day had the Falcons 2nd team facing up to the other Sheffield 2nd team (The Phantoms) and four victories from four were secured as the home side again raced to victory by 85 points to 64.

On Sunday, The Falcons host the annual Northern Knockout Cup at Redbraes Park. With the top riders from each team racing in the 4 team tournament format, including the current British Champion Andy Angell, it should prove to be a great showpiece for the sport.

    Tapes up at 12pm

Come along for a great day out. Admission FREE and refreshments available
