CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

Am I the only one who finds this impossible to do? there were 8 bikes in our 'bike shed' which I don't use because I can't get the tandem near it, much less in it, without a lot of effort. The bike racks outside have a mix of staff and student bikes which change throughout the day, and may have people who work elsewhere as well. And I have no idea how many people work in my workplace!
SRD, I have just received the following from the KB BUG
"Please be advised that the University is taking part in Cycling Scotland's The Big Count today: The purpose of which is to build a picture over time of Scotland's cycle commuting habits. A count is being carried out of all bikes parked at University sites today.
I wanted to make you aware of this in case any of you were intending to report the number of bikes parked around your building. Please don't do this - since this will result in double counting!"
That will save some time!
Thanks Amir! Must try again to subscribe to the central area BUG...
Done! Only 2 at my office today, but we only have nine people. :)
I'll pass this on to friends.
1 - Me!
It super easy to do this at my work as mine is the only bike that is ever in the garage. There are about 60 people in my office and I'd say that a good 90% of them hate cyclists. They make this very clear with the things they say to me and the stories they tell about about how cyclists have annoyed them. I'd love to work somewhere that encouraged cycling and gave me more bikes to count. I stained a muscle in my side the other day lifting my bike up to my flat and I was in quite a lot of pain, the first thing my boss said to me was "you really should get a car, bikes are not good for you. If you need a parking space you can have 1, it would be great to get 1 more bike of the road." Think I need to find a more bike friendly employer.
There are no bikes in the racks here but there are 4 in the building. We don't use the outside racks.
@Estrellastyle - That's appalling. They should thank you for not adding to the traffic congestion. Terrifying to think of all those folks behind then wheel...
"Think I need to find a more bike friendly employer"
Sounds like it. They don't deserve you.
It is terrifying! Sometimes they can be quite aggressive with their chat and a few have even shouted at me on occasion. I often wish another cyclist worked here to help back me up. Hopefully 1 day their attitudes will change but I'm not holding my breath.
36 out of an office off ~350. Pretty good really, except we're running out of racks and given we only have 10 car spaces I can't see them removing one
56 in two buildings - wingpig can do the other...
@Estrellastyle - you need to come work with us ;)
Oh I forgot to add 6 bikes out of 45 employees. I think the most I ever saw was 8 in the rack downstairs.
70 here for (vague guess) 3,000 operatives. Perhaps spaces on the racks for 30 more since the additional ten racks were installed in March.
51 for roughly 1800 staff out in NHS land. I wonder what the rules are for a school? The afterschool club is on a healthy 4 out of 17 now that summer's here. He said, with a straight face.
Estrella: wow. In a bad way.
Estrella, your boss and your colleagues sound like a right bunch of bullies. I really hope you ARE looking for another employer.
@Min I will be soon, trying to buy a house at the moment so unfortunately I need to stay in the job till that's done. I've been thinking of leaving for a while as they are a bit crazy here with some of there views not just about cycling.
Never walk backwards on a Tuesday...
Don't put jam in a toaster...
That sort of thing?
I wish it was stuff like that. If you go to twitter and look up @colleaguessaid you can see some of their statements. I've been quite kind by not putting up any of the racist stuff that they sometimes come out with.
I kind of wondered about that from what you were saying, if it wasn't cycling it would be something else. Very best of luck with the house and on getting out of there!
Well if you're reading this tomorrow (Wednesday)

Be part of the Big Count, Scotland's only national cycle to work audit, this Wednesday the 15th of May.
The Big Count asks you, twice a year, to visit the bike parking at your workplace and count the number of bikes there that day. It's that simple. There are so many reasons to take part:
• we will enter you into a prize draw to win a bike;
• you will be regularly and anonymously monitoring your organisation's rates of cycling;
• it takes 5 minutes to do;
• your organisation will be taking a step towards becoming a Cycle Friendly Employer;
• and you will be helping Scotland become a nation of cyclists.
To take part, please take 5 minutes to count the bikes at your place of work and then visit http://www.bigcount.co.uk to enter the details.
Happy counting!
"
WARNING: may result in spam to the workplace you count.
I think CS may have learned the lesson from its mistake last year(?)
wasn't it the spokes count today too?
Yep, Spokes count was on Tuesday - today for SRD, yesterday for the rest of us by the miracle of asynchronous communications!
Robert
The survey must be totally skewed.
Companies that have say 10 or more bikes will probably have someone who's heard of the survey, and is prepared to do the counting.
Companies that have only 1 or 2 bikes, or no one who cycles will not get counted. So the modal share, at least, will be wrong.
But with a dodgy survey, Cycling Scotland can claim how 'they fabulously increased modal share' whilst actually doing b* nothing.
Numbers down at my workplace today compared to last year, despite larger numbers on the road in the morning.
110 at my workplace today (out of about 3,000). Didn't do the count last year, so don't know if this is down or not.
Further complaints about the survey: it asks for post code in a separate field, which I assume is to geolocate the data. Trouble is, my work (and many other big sites, I'll guess) have a non-geographic post code. If you put the post code into Google, it shows that I work at Russell Road sorting office, which I don't...
I expect the Royal Mail's cycle to work stats are being skewed a bit...
Train to Stirling at 8.13 had 12 bikes
I was chatting to the conductor who was very relaxed about it, which was quite big of him. He told me he took a while to be nice to cyclists again following a trip down from Inverness where he allowed a party of six cyclists on to the train. One of the bikes got scratched and the cyclist sued Scotrail. The guard was then hauled in and given a roasting. This is his side of the tale but the good thing is that he is back being nice to us again, also a very big man.
