Having a hard time trying to plan a bit of a holiday next week. Flying to finnland from Edinburgh for a few days and when I come back I'm planning on going to the west coast near loch lomond/loch striven to do some cycling. Problem...is there anywhere I can store my bicycle while I'm away?! Are the waverley station bike racks secure enough? Any help/tips/advice would be really helpful, I don't want to give up just yet! Cheers, Tim

The Waverley racks looked secure enough a couple of weeks back... regular passenger-and-staff-traffic past them, well-lit, out of the rain, a fair few long-stay bikes which hadn't been attacked for parts or anything. There were some operatives wandering around inspecting the you've-been-here-too-long stickers and talking about removing a few suspected abandoned bikes but that was only on the double-decker racks right next to platform 2 - the Sheffield stands further to the south didn't seem to attract the same attention and had obviously-dusty bikes which didn't yet have warnings zip-tied to them, but it might be worth checking with the station how long things can stay there before they get tagged with a warning of impending removal.

I would think that for 'a few days' ie under a week, the waverley stands would be safer than pretty much anywhere else in Edinburgh!

Thanks guys, feel a lot more happy to leave my bike there now. Probably take off any removable parts and make sure I take a few locks as well. Don't want to come back to find that I've got no pedals/saddle. Can't believe how fast the replies were! haha while I'm here I might as well ask if the trains from edinburgh to glasgow are bicycle friendly or do I need to book my bike on in advance?

    Thanks again,

    Tim

Tim - no need to book your bike on the ScotRail trains from Glasgow QS to Edinburgh. Bikes are carried free of charge, look for the blue and white bike logo by the train door so you know where to get on. I'd avoid travelling at rush hour though, as space is limited.

No booking allowed (except if you take the East Coast service that originates in London). Should be fine, if not during rush hour, and you don't have a tandem or recumbent (in which case, aim for the East Coast service, which has storage at the front of the train and book).

Hey Tim did you post this up on cyclechat as well? or am having severe de ja vu!!!! ? I've left my bike locked up at Edinburgh airport for a week before whilst I was in the Netherlands and it was fine. cameras everywhere and not as many random people milling about as there are at waverly. I would offer you my garage but it's full to bursting. Have a good one.

Hi Recombodna, I did indeed post this up on cyclechat, got some good replies but decided to ask here as well, a few more locals knocking about I imagine. It didn't even cross my mind to bike to the airport, I get in to Edinburgh about 23.30 so I've got plenty of time on my hands before my flight in the morning! Have to remember my lights...Appreciate the offer of a garage, but far to polite to accept it, even if it was nice and tidy! Found out last night that my freewheel is about to die, thankfully it was on the way back from work rather than out in the scottish countryside! Sure I can get it fixed and look forward to some new rides...
    Thanks for all the help/tips,

    Tim
