Driver turned left across a road club ride at around 6.10 tonight.

I was cycling the other way at 12mph. Seemed to be around 30 bikes going in Easterly direction at 25mph + - same as traffic flow. Most were two abreast to keep road space short. Drivers generally seemed not worried (or deferred to being outnumbered!)
One driver then slowed and forced a left turn into Meadowfield Gardens. This forced several members of the club to brake and go round the corner. He was quickly 'boxed off' and unable to move his car.

I can't really comment on whether there was some pre-amble to this incident.

I was then amazed to see the (middle aged) driver leave his vehicle and challenge one rider to a fight. He actually ran after one bike which was just trickling along at 3mph - the rider suggesting that the 'guilty party' should give up driving as he obviously hadn't checked his mirrors.

Needless to say other road users were slowing down to have a look. Sure some would not approve as the sight of 'mass cyclists' always annoys drivers.
I was late for a cycling appointment so didn't hang around. Maybe someone else can tell us more.

Have now heard more on this from Andrew at The Bicycle Works.

The driver involved had intentionally cut up cyclists before trying to run them into a left turn.

He then punched one of the ERC members after I cycled by. My worry is that if he wasn't charged he may be driving today.

Might have been better to lock him out his car and call the police. Not sure of the legality of this though...

If anyone thought to take the reg number then it should be reported to the Police, it sound like an assault has take place and there were witnesses.

"The driver was sentenced ... to six months’ imprisonment for dangerous driving and banned from driving for two years"

    Now that makes a statement.

Trouble is both sentences will run concurrent, rather the driving ban starting after he leave prison. Having a driving ban while banged up isn't going to have much effect.
