The heart of the thoroughfare is being closed to traffic for a month from the end of July – after the return of buses to Princes Street – to make way for performers and visitors.

Why are they putting the buses back on Princes Street? I thought it was supposed to be pedestrianised?

Simple answer is it wouldn't be happening until trams run - whenever that may be...

Worth asking questions about what IS planned now that Lesley 'no major road changes for two years' Hinds is in charge.

So they can close George Street for a month because it's the Festival, and because Festival = £lots, but they couldn't shut it for one day to support European Mobility Week's In Town Without My Car Day?

Put the buses back on Princes St and I'd put money on there being a third phase of repairs to the tram rails.

I think we will see the pints hit a heady £6 now they have the Geroge St set paying

Yeah, and the street surface will get completely destroyed. Just look at George Street.

No need to pander to the eco-fascists, you can't interfere with people's choice right to drive. Well, not unless an 'impresario' is offering to pay, of course. After all, there's the chipwrapper journalists rabble-rousing campaigns team to worry about, eh Lesley?

Woop! Pedestrianising George Street by stealth. Get in.

Maybe this might get taken forward when the world doesn't fall off its axis in August and people see the benefits...

Alas, retailers already have their answer to that proposal. You see it's all very well doing this during the Festival, when locals are on holiday and tourists are here. The rest of the year, the "locals" (ie. the East Lothian barbour/green wellies brigade) just have to be able to park their Range Rovers right outside the shop (well the other end of George Street will do).

Of course walking's not something any sane person does to get actuallu around the place, it's just something toursits do for a few weeks of the year when moving between drinking venues.

Perhaps if we arranged a show for the Fringe in which the audience were required to bring their own seats (bikes) and have the gimmick that the show is cycling around the town, we could get the council to fall over themselves to close roads.
