I've wondered before why someone didn't try 'updating' this. hope it looks nicer than the image on the website though.

Interesting looking concept. I approve of the lack of through roads. However it's not always possible to build your way out of a problem by knocking down the existing structure and replacing it with a new one(s), if the underlying social and economic problems aren't also tackled. The article seems to put a spin on it that the housing block was at fault for the ills of the area.

They are reducing the height of the 'Fort' wall to make it more friendly as an area and to better integrate it with the surrounding community; and a pedestrian and cycle friendly 'through route' is being created. The architects consulted with Edinburgh Access Panel last week. They've also consulted with the safer communites initiative to make it less susceptible to crime etc.

And this is why I tend to feel that knocking down housing that is physically not fit for purpose and rebuilding with new can create social problems. It's a little like comparing how a village grows gradually, a church here, a new row of houses there, a couple of shops, a showroom, a few more houses...and before you know it your village has grown into a small town but has retained its heritage and community. The clearance of slums in major cities also took away the community. Putting people into shiny high-rises with only one way in and out and multiple dependencies on physical layout probably isolates people from each other and from nature, and concentrates any problems of people's own making. What of the massive construction in Sheffield? They even gave the building's floors and wings names of the former roads, but...
But if you build low-rise, with a decent layout of grass and concrete with accessible shops, you can still end up with a community bent on its own destruction.
