    Hello,
I was wondering if there's somewhere I can take old tyres etc for recycling/disposal? The bike station? Or should I just bin them?

(I remember when we scrapped our old car we had £5 taken off its value for each of the tyres that needed dealing with).

    Thanks :)

I think Arellcat previously mentioned that the council tip wouldn't take bicycle tyres? Something to do with lacking the scrap iron content of a car tyre?

If you find out, let us know, I've a few years worth of dead Gatorksins accumulating in my attic.

Check out this site which makes belts from old tyres/tubes. Maybe start a new sideline if you have enough kicking around?

Those are nice! I got Mr SRD a wallet made out of recycled tyres a while ago from a fair-trade website and my main impression was that it was incredibly heavy. Don't know if bike tyre ones would be lighter?

Thanks people. Although I could set up as a belt maker, I think I'll leave this as "not resolved" :P and continue stockpiling old tyres/tubes.

Does anyone know if ether the bike station or Bike Co-op are still collecting used inner tubes? I have a number of them waiting to go somewhere.

Thanks amir, unfortunately I've just discovered/remembered that they are closed on a Monday so I'll have to go another time.

In the interest of closing a long unresolved topic, I had a couple of mtb tyres with me last time I was at the recycling centre and the dude there took them off me and put them with the other tyres.

I think I saw a sign in the Edinburgh Alpkit shop saying they took tyres (and tubes?) for recycling.

Anyone got any recent experience of recycling either tubes or tyres?

I was in Decathlon a couple of weeks ago and they had a big receptacle for inner tubes.

It was full at the time.

If you are looking for places that take tyres and tubes, then the Velorim website is a good place to start https://velorim-group.com/
They list quite a few bike shops in Edinburgh who they collect from.

It is also worth noting that there is a cost to the bike shops for the recycling efforts (https://velorim-group.com/what-we-do/).

Also, that for many years it has been illegal to landfill motor vehicle tyres, but only recently the law has changed to include a ban on bicycle tyres in landfill.
