Entirely onanistic posting, I freely admit.

I finally got round to rejigging my mancave so that the bike rail was free. Up till an hour ago the computer sat under the shelf, only leaving the two lefthand hooks free. Now that I have the Cannondale, which is either going to be used for offroad, or more likely as the tractor for my planned Carry Freedom trailer, I needed to get the thing firing on all cylinders.

    I be happy.

Presumably Alfred Pennyworth is lingering just out of shot. BTW your N = my N+1.

The one second from the right in the bottom pic looks like it's doing with its handlebars that thing you do with your shoulders to walk through a narrow gap, or the thing you do with your feet when someone wants to hoover underneath them.

Aha, so will be joining the ranks of the cargonauts then. Maybe some 26" semi-slick tyres on that mtb for tarmac riding?

Already looked with interest at Big Apples, having found them to be a fine pair of shoes for Paper Bicyles. Failing that, Marathons.

    I like. Lots and lots.
What are the hooks in the ceiling attached to? Or is what appears to be the ceiling a shelf with a bar underneath?

Second guess is correct, Fimm. There's all kinds of guff stored above it. Pretty smart design from Mr Previous Occupant.

Piffle. I was hoping for tips from your good self on how to build my own... :o)

I already had your clever storage facility squirrelled away in the diy repository part of my brain, its a very clever idea.

Fimm, it should be fairly straight forward... A wardrobe rail will take a fair amount of weight, my kilt weighs more than my bikes, if you were worried you could get some mild steel in the same dimensions from the web. The brackets at either end are (i think) the standard brackets one uses to fit said rail and it looks super reinforced in the middle with the strut. Its those hooks that might be hard to source. Coated hooks can be bought cheaply the clever bit is connecting it to the rail which is where i'm scratching my head...

Yeah, that's what I was thinking: it's basically a built in wardrobe adapted for bikes.

Inelegant but quick solution would be to stick as fat as possible a dowel inside the rail to screw the hooks into to avoid having to finely-tune the size of the holes in the rail through which the screw ends of the hooks go.

That would work, the beauty of uberuces predecessors solution is that the hooks slide on the rails.

Can you get bolt-ended rubberised hooks rather than self-tapping-screw-ended? Bolt-ended-rubberised-book plus P-clip plus bolt would work. If not, a long enough sleeve bolt ought to get enough bite on a screw to hang a bike from it without an episode of the heebies.

So it probably is not a wardrobe rail, more like the kind of rail they use in factories or abattoirs to keep the production line running smoothly?

I'm more interested in the dial things on top of your computer.
Either they are turbo boost cpu charge dials, or speed dials which allow multi player Mavis Teaches Typing?

Not sure wingpig, I'll have to check in the diy sheds this evening when i'm out that way any way. Would a couple of p-clips take the weight of a bike? Uberuce we need a bigger picture of the rail/hook interface. ;)

Crowriver, its definitely a round tube , whether its just mild steel rod or a re-purposed rail I'm not sure.

A hook ending in a bolt with the same thread pitch as the screw of a Jubilee clip would work nicely...

I think double ended hooks can be found fairly easily.

    Wish, command, etc.

I assume the rail is aluminium, since it's not magnetic.

Hrm. Demerit one point from Mr. Previous Occupant, since the hooks don't really thread into the clamps that well. Well enough, it seems, but not as nicely as I'd like.

I had a poke at them and the receiving nut thing seems to be integral to the clamp on the underside. It resisted as much force as I was willing to give, anyway.

Some kind of scaffolding link bracket, perhaps? Hex nut thingy probably supposed to take a grub screw to stop scaffy poles sliding about dangerously.

Hmm. Packing the inside of the thread on the clamp with something before screwing the hook in would securify it a bit. Tapping a hole in the side of the sleeve and adding a retention screw/bolt would securify it a bit more.

Unabashed scaffolding fittings pr0n below. Imagine the posibilities for bicycle hanging nirvana with this lot!

Work (well, the MoD in general) blocks Flickr, so I'm trying to imagine the above without the benefit of pictures. All was fine until the abattoir mention, and now I'm picturing a vast cave with dim lighting, dry ice drifting across the floor and unsettling large shapes suspended in the gloom.

    Uberuce, you monster...

That t-joint towards the bottom left would be perfect as long as you were happy with a max number bikes you wanted to hang up. Just need to secure the hook inside the pointing down section.

I'd have gone for S-shaped hooks (yep, like meat hooks...)

I do have rails available free to a good home - I think the specs are 25mm, steel, white plastic coating. Length is probably 1.2m. And supports, mid and end.

    http://www.screwfix.com/c/ironmongery-security/wardrobe-accessories/cat840252

It was cheaper to get a pack of 4, than buy one...

They've taken quite a weight of dive kit, hanging over the bath, so should be strong enough for a couple of lightweight bikes, with appropriate screws/fixings.

PM me if you fancy a set (rail, mid & two end supports).
