Yeah I saw the ENews version.

    http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/breaking-edinburgh-news/Road-maintenance-chief-fined-for.6241754.jp

"His client, he said, had reported himself to the police with his documentation. Deans, he said, travelled between 30,000 and 40,000 miles a year on business. He had a special interest in motoring matters and understood that traffic management legislation suggested that pedestrian crossings should be cited further away from junctions.

The crossings at the Bridges were very close to the junction."

    Er....

Assuming he was travelling up North Bridge there's an ASL, maybe the bus was in the box (no excuse).

I read that and instantly wanted to puke and hit something at the same time...

"A bus was obscuring the lights on the left side of the road and unfortunately he wasn't able to stop in time.

His reactions were fast and he did brake as quickly as he could but could not avoid contact with the pedestrian. It is fortunate the injuries were minimal but the layout of the crossing was perhaps unfortunate."

He wasn't looking where he was going, the road layout has nothing to do with it, he just wasn't looking ahead and thinking ahead, he should have been banned. Yet again I wonder why we tolerate this sort of behaviour and suggest that a law of Strict Liability would make a difference.

The explanation is a genuine mystery to me - the only pedestrian crossing on South Bridge is miles away from the closest junction (see http://tinyurl.com/28snerq ).

On the face of it however, given that the women was essentially OK, the driver did stop and did admit guilt, I think 6 points and £500 is not bad.

In contrast, the going rate for crushing a cyclist to death is much lower. The first google result is a lorry driver who got £300 fine (no points); he had "been looking for some papers in his cabin when the bike was beside him and also when his vehicle began to turn left and the fatal crash occured."

That's if you even get prosecuted.

Did anyone ever hear what happened after Dr Iain Wilson was crushed by that left-turning Neil Williams Haulage truck? Presumably there was (at least) a fatal incident enquiry, but I must have missed it.

I'm assuming it was at the actual High Street junction. The defence comments are a bit strange though.

How can the pedestrians crossing at a junction be too close to it though? That makes even less sense!

I suppose he might mean that the white line should be placed much further back from the physical junction, which isn't the same thing at all as moving the crossing. However, it wouldn't make any difference to pedestrians crossing on the green man being hit by a driver who didn't obey the red light..?

It's annoying that you can't get court transcripts and sentencing decisions via google.
