Also don't forget that the Forth Road Bridge will be closed to cyclists between 1pm and 5pm so that the torch can cross in a car around 4....

Looks like it starts at stenhouse Rd near the shell garage so you should still see it at chesser.
Posted 11 years ago # -
That is what I though steveo Stenhouse Drive but website suggesting in the Davey lamp until asda? Might still check out the convoy it is close by

@chrisfl I thought you meant the bridge was completely shut to all!!!
"
The bridge will be closed to cyclists and pedestrians from 13:00 until 17:00
The bridge will close to traffic in both directions for approximately 15 minutes at 16:00"

No it just seems a big excessive closing for the whole afternoon when it's going across in a car; the Forth Bridge website says that "Mark Beaumont will carry the Olympic flame across the bridge between 13:08 and 13:38" but there's no mention of that on the Torch relay site which says that it's around Falkirk around then...

The great Olympic car relay.
It's due to be going along my commute route around the time I'm due to be going that way.
Sounds like a challenge to me!

Mark Beaumont is also doing the 7am shift in St Andrews. Are we short on celebrities?

Not sure whether to put this in the Spotted thread, which seems to have temporarily wandered off into a Torch thread.
Anyway, we went to watch it on Colinton Road. Just after the event after the cops had gone, there was the magic moment when there were more people than cars, and the pedestrians took over the road. I did have to encourage a couple of people to step into the road though with shorter version of 'when there's 1,000 people and 5 cars at the traffic lights, you really don't need to wait for the green man'.
There was also the inspiring sight of a youngish family riding back up Myreside Road through the post-event traffic chaos, each on their own bikes. I would guess the youngest cyclist was under 10, and she was confidently holding her own in primary position with a taxi behind her and no adult nearby. It wasn't a dangerous situation, but nevertheless it was one that few families would countenance, and I salute them for doing it.
In fact, there was a surprising number of bikes visible after the event.

Yes.. it's not all bad.
Good on them.
Despite my 'Chariots of Flab' jibe we have to realise that people could walk and cycle to see it rather than fly to London.

Did marky B cycle over the forth bridge with the flame? Green roofer one of the few positives in supporting minor football team such as DUFC is that on the way to the drubbing fuelled by some pivo estivo you can all walk up the street and the cars must obey. I am not endorsing this as a hobby as there are many many downsides

I think the forth bridge twitter account posted some pics of the torch being cycled over.
Again possibly one for the spotted thread, but there did seem to be quite a number of cyclists who I presume were stuck behind the procession, I caught a glimpse as they went past:
Also interesting to see some of the police working on the event on bikes; I have a set of pics at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chrisfleming/sets/72157630121605714/

Saw mark Beaumont on telly cycling with one hand and carrying flame in tother - all good

I had no idea the thing was coming up my street until I went over the bridge to a chorus of hurrahs. The trailer was a big hit, apparently.
I did tweet a while back about flashmobbing a crowd together to cheer people up Ashley Terrace just on a normal commuting day. Didn't actually expect to see it happen in that tedious place outside my skull, but I declare it a good idea from me.

Looks like the minders were actually getting a work out there!

Mr fimm and I were down on Slateford Road to watch it go past. I think it was worth the effort! I was amused by the promotional busses, Tour de France stylee ;-) and also by the idiot in a BMW who tried to turn right out of Robertson Avenue, got stuck in the middle of the road (as was obviously going to happen) and was made to back down by a police motorcyclist - some of whom were from the Metropolitan Police, did anyone else notice that? Would that be a nice trip round the country, or a really tedious job, I wonder?
There was quite a peloton of cyclists following, but I think the photos of Bruntsfield show more. None of my photos are any good - except the one of the torch itself. (And by a nice coincidence, our Olympics tickets came yesterday!)

Not big or hard or clever, but I did enjoy the novelty factor of seeing drivers being told to stfu>fo n00b and cyclists waved on merrily.
The half marathon was much the same, as was the Innocent-skirting first part of the St Abbs ride on the full marathon, with DaveC and Kaputnik.

I couldn't tell if the cyclists behind it all yesterday were along to watch or delayed by the procession. Nice to see the crowd high-fiving the polis and mostly ignoring the hyperactively-shouting morons in the sponsors' carts.
Posted 11 years ago # -
yes, the police were making efforts to smile, say hi to the kids and whatnot. those trucks/busses/vans were just horrid. lots of noise, but actively trying not to contact people, except for thrusting bottles of pop on them. ick.

I got the feeling that the cyclists behind were following for fun.
I was at Holy Corner; didn't have a brilliant view, but like Greenroofer enjoyed the crowds afterwards.
Not often you see eight buses in a row outside Princes Street.

Just back from watching the relay pass along Fisherrow. I think some of the cyclists are official - someone in sports kit, a guy in sort of fancy-dress. My neighbour says the minders are from the Met. The motor-cycle police were from Strathclyde.

I am just back from watching in Eskbank. It was great to loads of people out on the street (even if many had parked all over the shop). There were official bikes - white MTBs - the riders had a black backpack on in the shape/size of the torches.
