I recently had difficulty loosening the lockring on a cassette. So this am after the torch relay I popped down to Newtongrange to the Lothian Bike Shed to see if they could help. The guy there was very nice and did it embarrassing easily (though using a vice - must get one) and for free.

The last time I went there, they were based in Dalkeith and he gave me some cable end thingies for free. So at the moment I can't recommend them enough and I will be trying them out again. They seem to be mainly mechanics rather than retail. I asked about the price of wheel building - £ 20 for labour - you bring your own rim/hub.

Cool!! I've never checked that place out. Everyone should have a Vise. I got mine for wilkinsons for £55 when my last one sheared in half trying to looses a bottom bracket ( it was very very old....the vise and the BB) I noticed the other day that toolstation are doing cheap engineers vise's for about £25.

I have praised this place on the forum before. The owner, Davie, is always friendly and helpfull. Several times after replaceing components he has said to take the bike away and make sure i'm happy with it before paying the bill. If you are local to the area you should give him a go.
