Found this on another bike forum, the link might be handy for someone . . .

I started to install the cassette on the bike I am building and as I read the instructions from Shimano I noticed that the Shimano chain I had purchased was not listed as compatible. They are both Ultegra and both 10 speed. Upon investigation one person said they had the same issue with the same components. He called Shimano and the rep said that the chain wasn't listed as compatible because they did not have space to list it ( now that sounds suspect ). The rep said that the combination would be ok but that the chain might stretch more quickly under strain, again a strange statement.

Anyway, research revealed a web site that lets you check Shimano component compatibility. Here is the website: http://www.celebrazio.net/bicycling/shimano_compatibility.html

i found it to be user friendly and informative. I'm willing to bet others have had similar experiences, maybe this information will help. It seems as if Shimano is getting carried away with a large variety of parts within a line of components, very confusing and somewhat frustrating.

I had a conversation only today about Shimano and how they have not really added to cycling being a "green" activity as much as they could due to the fact that every few months they change things on their components making them very rapidly obsolete or incompatible. This, of course, ensures profitability for the company, but means that you can only discard components if they become incompatible or not interchangeable. Just for instance is front chainrings, with all different BCD's, with five, six and now four arms. Ten and eleven speed cassettes/freewheels, not compatible with chains. Chains getting thinner and more flexible to fit said number of sprockets, thus increasing the possibility of breaking and most certainly stretching faster and guess what also far more expensive!! Hubs on back wheels in particular requiring you to buy spacers to accommodate a 7-speed on an 8 or 9-speed hub, and being unable to purchase a 7-speed hub for love nor money, and the same goes for shifters, let alone, heaven forfend a 5 or 6-speed hub. My first serious bike had a double chainring and a 5-speed cassette. You now get more gears with a single front ring and why would you want 33 gears, really, the amount of overlap must be several gears (I'll leave some of those interested in ratios to work out the number)with a triple clanger and 11-speed hub. We were obviously "harder" back in the day...

I know Shimano get a bad reputation for this, but I've never had an issue disregarding their instructions and mixing and matching things.

6/7/8 speed "hyperglide" chains are all compatible with 8 speed freehub / 6/7 speed freewheel systems. Sora 8-speed derailleurs can also be used (non-indexed) with 6/7 speed gear systems. I'm happily running 8 speed Hyperglide chain and cassette with Ultegra bottom bracket, 105 (9-sp) crankset, Tiagra (9-sp) front and Sora (8-sp) rear derailleurs with Sora 8-speed STIs.

I think SRAM, Shimano and Campag are all as bad as eachother at constantly changing the tolerances and compatibility of all their top of the line stuff. Once you drop down a few groupset levels it generally all seems to work together. Even mixing SRAM and Shimano stuff possible for a lot of applications.

I mixed and matched Shimano components on my Orbit with no problems since it didn't seem possible to get a matching set of anything. I have 10sp shifters with a 9sp cassette. Can't remember what the derailleur was supposed to do but it does it anyway.

this is a very cool gear/transmission compatibility tool, how come I've just discovered it? http://bit.ly/Li5GkH
