Couldn't swing a cat for CCE folks this morning...
Were the speeches any good after I left? I had to go wurkly just as the Spokes fella was finishing up.

Indeed, had to leave just as Dave du Feu was getting going. AND couldn't have a bacon roll cos of the roll aspect (and the huge queue I couldn't be bothered standing in).
Got squeezed by a taxi just before turning into City Chambers (who overtook forcing a taxi coming down the way to brake and move to the side of the road).

Yeah, there was a CCE massive in the City Chambers this morning: nice to see you all! Alas we got out of the house too late to get to the Leith Walk ride, so made our way separately to the breakfast. We did spot the riders coming in later on, good to see Cllr Maggie Chapman along with you folks.
After missing the food last year, I made sure myself and daughter were in the queue for rolls pronto. One advantage of bringing a child is you can claim an extra roll, and when inevitably small person only has a wee taste of it, that's more hungry cyclist food for daddy ;-) Mind you that doesn't work once they get a bit older...
A good turnout, no doubt helped by the nice weather. I was pleased to note quite a number of councillors and at least one MSP (Alison Johnstone) at the gathering. Looked like there were some press there too.

@chdot @kaputnik @SRD @Arelicat: sorry, just was a bit of a rush last night. Hope you'll forgive me! [added a link on facebook].
@Uberuce: I feel the transport convener was still worryingly vague on what she was going to do - she said she's hoping to make Edinburgh nice enough for cyclists that she will get on a bike by the end of her term.
There must have been ~18 councillors there (about 1/3 of them!). We just have to all keep writing to our councillors about the issues we find most difficult:
East/West across the city centre, Leith Walk? Contra-flow routes for cyclists on one-way roads, etc... keep writing to them!
Loads of people at the event! Fantastic stuff :D Anyone have any idea of how many people were there?
Our ride was good! Although I was misunderstood when I wanted to pull over to let everyone catch up/chat for a minute - people thought I was directing us sideways over the canal!
Think the ride showed the problems with Gilmore Place which stops it being 'family friendly'. Hope the other rides also got to show their councillors what needs improving.
What did other peoples' councillors say?
Thanks all for taking part!
(They ordered in extra food so I think there was enough for everyone?).

Well done Lionfish, you must be feeling relieved now. :-)

@Min: Definitely! *deep breath*
Can get on with a nice, quiet day in the office :)
Hope some rain washes off the chalk - some of my messages weren't clear about which Wednesday the ride was on.Posted 12 years ago # -
Cameron Rose came along on the ride from Newington and was looking very dapper in his suit and bike!
3/5 of the southside and newington councilors are regular cyclists seemingly. Mlr Rose was a nice man. He even managed to hand out his clr business cards to various riders as we were going along!
We had some people shooting past us on their way to work who didn't respond to my suggestion that they should come get some free breakfast.

Yes, well done Lionfish & Minimoth!! the rides really added to the overall effect, and profile. good for you!!
Now, we need to get some folk organising 'infrstucture tours' with their councillors and others in their wards!

Also thanks to:
minimoth, kaputnik, SRD, ARobComp, chdot, anth, ruggtomcat, Min, LaidBack, wingpig, Arelicat, crowriver, Puzzle, sallyhinch, Jess, Iain, Emma, Kate Joester, Leisha Nolan, Robert, Barney and all the SPOKES people for the breakfast etc, and the councillors for taking part, and the people who made the breakfast, and the forum for making it happen and providing useful advice and ideas :)
[sorry if I've missed anyone - I'm sure I must have!]

Yeah well done all who organized.. Hope SRD's finger is better after all that blatant cycle infrastructure vandalism ;-). I went down to festival square to get the Planet X tagged ( Q was much shorter).

I took so long over my pre-bike beakfast breakfast that I thought I'd missed the Porty feeder ride. But I caught up with them at Brunstane and we had a great ride in on NCR1. Only one grumpy bus driver to spoil the mood.
Nice to see so many CCE faces. I always feel like an interloper in Edinburgh though the MSP did make the point that what's being done in Edinburgh should be repeated by all Scottish Councils. Not sure she's right when she said they were doing nothing though. I saw all the chalking on my way home (yes, I'm working from home today).Posted 12 years ago # -
Thanks to all who arranged, and to Emma for leading the Morningside ride. It was good to make my first Spokes breakfast. Melanie Main, our councillor (Green) was on the ride, so had a good chat to her, and she also introduced me to Council team responsible for 'safe routes to school'. Found out what 'Paper' bikes were... I had no clue before that.. Thought they were works of art, and in a way they are...

Article on the Edinburgh Report website:
http://www.theedinburghreporter.co.uk/2012/06/spokes-bike-breakfast-2012/We need to think of replies to the last question:
"Transport Convenor Lesley Hinds declared that she hopes to become a cyclist before the end of her term... suggestions for a suitable bicycle for her please?"Posted 12 years ago # -
Hurrah! I can see me and my bike!

"(They ordered in extra food so I think there was enough for everyone?)."
That would account for why they had food after 9:00 - well done whoever organised it!

It was great to meet even more cyclists from Leith.
Here's a picture borrowed from this morning.
https://twitter.com/livia1521/status/215374927744876544/photo/1Last year I went along to the Bike Breakfast on my own - not knowing another cyclist. This year as my cycling addiction has grown, so as the number of two wheel familiar faces. Great turn out!

Good to see more younger faces at the event. Ged at the Bike Coop stand was pleased to have dry weather to lube chains for once!
"Transport Convenor Lesley Hinds declared that she hopes to become a cyclist before the end of her term... suggestions for a suitable bicycle for her please?"
... think Roibeard should offer to taxi her round on his Hase Pino... It has a freewheel on front pedals so she doesn't have to pedal too much!
Well done to all. Weather and company was great...

Cllr Hinds is looking thrilled at being there. Really needs to work on that poker face.

One of the positives I took away (apart from a full tum, chat with nice folk and a clean chain) is that the new council is committed to implementing the Active Travel Action Plan. Mention also made of trying to meet Cllr Mackenzie's 1% increased spend on cycling per annum target if possible.
Also interesting that they apparently haven't yet decided what to spend the money on this year. Although the big map at the council stall was quite clear about the infrastructure priorities and timescales. My hunch is the new Transport Convener will look to her officials for the detail on implementation of ATAP and advice on spending priorities this year. Which to be honest could be just fine.
Also nice to see Cllr Burns declaring himself publicly as a cyclist. We had the evidence anyway, thanks to Anth's recent photo on the canal...

@uberuce, can I use your picture
for this year's BBR publicity? Also does anyone remember that nice picture of the ride just almost arriving, along the high-street (I think it was the ride from the dominion cinema).Posted 11 years ago # -
Sure. I'll mail you the hi-res original if the Flickr one hasn't enough pixels.
Posted 11 years ago # -
Thanks! (good work on the marshalling yesterday, sorry I didn't stay longer at the pub).
