Planning has been underway for quite some time now... 8)

  3. Woo hoo!!!!

Lunchtimes in the Ventoux (I'm assuming they're showing it live every day) are planned. Pondering an end of race BBQ, but loathe to plan anything weather-dependant that far ahead!

I have a few afternoons off pencilled in, for when the road goes up the way. Just hoping that work plays ball...

Anth - they're showing it every day? If they have Wifi - I might just up sticks from my office and work from there!

  6. I would have thought they'd just get the Eurosport feed in. Don't know yet, will have to check. But aye, expecting to become a July regular!

re the Tourmalet. I cannot believe that I spent 5 years living within sight of this pub (during which period it was mainly shut), and then I move and they go and turn it into an (apparently) decent place!

meepmeep - from the reviews, the draft beer is nothing to tweet about, but the german bottled range is better

@SRD Murray's (not me the guy who runs the tourmalet) opened another cycling based pub in tollcross... the Ventoux.

    Bring on le tour!!!!

I'm sure broadcasting of le Tour at the Ventoux would be a super impetus for a meet?

German bottled beer? And the TDF on TV? Where? Mr fimm is rather partial to weissbier...

  12. Ventoux is the new one on Tollcross (Brougham Street? I might be completely wrong on the name, I have a bad habit of mixing up streets in this city)

Still need to confirm they will be showing the cycling. As for the beer, goddammit that the single biggest thing, even more so than bread, that I hate about gluten-free... (there are a few acceptable GF beers, but generally each supermarket will sell one brand, Earthy seem to have stopped stocking Peter's Yard GF, and you can forget about it in bars).

Seems like a great opportunity to parody the TdF in all kinds of ways (a peleton trying to squeeze up past the Missoni, for instance, where all the buses are parked in the cycle lane?)

I watched the roundup on ITV4 and have to say the quality of the picture was rubbish. It looked like the telly people were filming it on a crappy 90's nokia phone. I thought it was just cable companies who reduced bandwidth on the 'outside' channels during peek soap times.

  19. Annoyingly the Ventoux doesn't open till 2. Just after the lunch rush...

Been loving this Tour, always gets going when they hit the hilly bits; the sprinters are impressive to watch going about their business, but the climbers and GC guys are just awe inspiring.

And the fact that we genuinely could have a British winner this year (and not just that, but possibly a 1-2) is astonishing. Froome has been immense. Would have won the Vuelta if he'd been released from Brad duties - I think he could be a Tour winner in years to come (possibly even next year if the rumour Brad won't ride the Tour again if he wins are true).

And if he wins, then doesn't get SPOTY because some Olympic runner got a gold then it will be a travesty (though highly likely because the BBC will be showing it, he'd help his cause by also winning the Olympic TT).

Yeah, loads of entertainment and excitement so far, and that includes yesterday's time trial (to be honest, it's not often you can say that...)

Froome's been impressive, but not the surprise that a lot of people have been suggesting. I'm pretty sure he got a top 10 finish (or thereabouts) in a TdF TT way back in 2008, when he was a newcomer with little support from his team (Barloworld) or country (Kenya). Also, see how many pros who know him predicted he'd do well in the TT.

His loyalty to Wiggins is to be applauded too. He made a lot of comments about Wiggins teaching him how to measure his effort at the Vuelta. Who knows if Froome would have sustained the pace if Wiggins had been on the front for him and dropped off on the last big climb of the day, leaving him to it. He's now got a nice contract and presumably a crack at some other grand tours on the back of it.

Can't wait for the proper mountains - there's going to be ambushes aplenty. If Sky can withstand everything the race can throw at them then they'll have earned the win.

Oh no, they are not showing the rest day live. I'll have to wait until 7:00 for the "round-up of news from the first rest day of this year's Tour"...

Its somewhat ironic that Brad will inevitably just sit on Cadel's wheel for the rest of the tour, just like Cadel did to Andy last year.**

TdF has the best telly coverage, but I've come round to preferring both the Giro and the Vuelta, in general.

** thats my vague recollection, anyway. I was in Greenland at the time, and coverage was patchy.

Wonder if Wiggins knows which journalists to be nice to when they ask questions?
I'm sure he wouldn't want to mistakenly upset the Murdoch empire.

The 1960s clearly has a lot to answer for. Then again, if listening to The Who helps Wiggins wear the Golden Fleece all the way to Paris, he can dress however he pleases. Bonne route Bradley

  26. "... just like Cadel did to Andy last year"

Pretty much. Cadel sucked wheels. People complained, but can you say it's any less impressive to be able to watch someone ride away from you, then measure you're effort to haul them back in? He's not explosive, neither is Wiggins, so they need to ride to their strengths. But yeah, it really is ironic that Wiggins has basically just turned Cadel's tactics back on him.

I'm also not sure Wiggins can really be tied down into the SKY media savvy party line if his expletive outburst about Twitter doping jibes is anything to go by. In fact I'd go so far as to say Wiggins couldn't give a toss about upsetting Murdoch (and he's too much of an asset for Murdoch to turn round and tell Brailsford to ditch him - and in addition, as we all know from Leveson, the Murdochs don't know about anything that goes on in their empire anyway).

p.s. yeah, the surprise about Froome's performance is... surprising, given he turned in such a good Vuelta, and has been performing so well for a few years now.

I think Bradley is more of a Paul Weller fan myself. It could be that his parents listened to The Who but he is a bit young for the 60's. Anyway I think he looks great in jeans and velvet jacket, and pointy shoes are "in" for men currently, so he is very now. Perhaps Rapha are thinking of sponsoring him?

I love the way he is so unimpressed with the paparazzi and tells them where to get off, love his irreverence, and how he puts them firmly in their places for being cheeky, ignorant gits. Good on him.

To be fair to Evans, he's lost that wheelsucker tag since he won the Worlds in 2009, and has frequently been an attacking rider.

At last year's TdF he dragged the entire leading group up the Galibier after Schleck jr went off up the road - if that was wheelsucking his suction works over distances of several kms. ;o)

I prefer to think of it as "draughting" myself and why not, saves you so much energy getting a lift, for that dash to the finish line when the leader/draughted is pooped, that's tactics for you, and a good one too if it gets you the maillot jaune!!

    Tomorrow's fireworks, then...

If I was Wiggins, I'd send Froome on up the road on the Croix de Fer to crack Evans resolve.
