@min you were wondering why someone had painted "no cycling" symbols on Dublin / Albany streets pavements?

Obviously someone scraped a nice New Town executive saloon, so the locals took matters into their own hands. I've reported to Clarence under graffiti. It's a world heritage site after all, can't be having it covered in spray paint!

The sign for No Bikes is a bicycle inside a red circle. By adding a red strike-through they have created a double negative. Therefore cycles are welcome.

So it means "No ghost bikes"?

I didn't think Edinburgh "did" ghost bikes.

I've had an idea for North Edinburgh park n ride. Huge carpark/bus terminal somewhere in Granton where there is lots of disused land. Make Lower Granton Rd peds & cycles only or at least join up the missing cycle path to the roundabout at the west end of L G rd and add ped/cycle crossing at the chicane at the junction of Trinity rd. Reopen the Tunnel from Waverly st to Broughton lit with a lift and secure cycle parking to George st. Then get a cycle hire scheme, preferably serviced by a proven track record European company and let people cycle along a flat route into town Very little hills esp if the end is in Waverly with dry covered secure cycle parking at the south end of the tunnel.

@DaveC The Scotland Street Tunnel runs under St Andrew Square (directly under South and North St Andrew Streets) I could be wrong but I think it might curve slightly at the Waverley end.

There was a semi-serious proposal (without funding) by Lothian Regional Council in late 80s for an Edinburgh metro/tram/rail system. Plans included an interchange at St Andrew Square between surface-level tram and "metro" running through the tunnel to Waverley (somehow it was to get beyond Waverley, under the Old Town and emerge somewhere into sunlight in Newington!)

So it mustn't therefore be beyond the realms of practicality to somehow connect the surface level with the tunnel level. You think the St Andrew Square gardens or the pavement outside would have plenty of space for a lovely covered secure bike rack / locker / hire facility.

Scotland Street Tunnel is 14.9m below surface in St Andrew Square or 11.2m under Princes Street. I'm pretty sure that's not out with the bounds of reason to build a lift down to!

Looks like they are not going to open up Dublin Street after all then which is what I was worried about. They must just have put the bike blockers up across the junction with Queen Street for no discernable reason - as usual.

    Posted 11 years ago #
  12. Oh there is a reason. It's to stop bikes. Clearly.

Well the run off from Broughton to Albany Street won't be opening today as they were digging the junction up when I cycled up Broughton Rd at 08.50.

When is York Place due to close to traffic? I thought it was today?

I think it is supposed to be tomorrow. The end on parking in Albany St has been taken away which I think will make this road passable for cyclists. With the usual warnings that the road surface is horrific.

I've not had my camera, but the lights at South Gyle Access pedestrian crossing (star of the photo Why in my contributions) have been out for two or three mornings this week.

I sincerely hope they didn't stay out during rush hour. It's not a major issue at 6.25am, but over the next two hours, forgeddaboutit.

Well actually, having just come past there they have painted in some "Give Way" markings right across Broughton Street at this point. I am not sure how you are supposed to turn right onto Albany Street going southbound. In fact I can't figure out why they needed to do this at all. :-?

    Re-arrange the letters F, T and W!

Will have to get out and grab some Flickr photos for the Trambles group, unless anyone get's there first *hint! hint!*

Those New Town streets aren't narrow (take the parked cars off them and you'll see that Edinburgh has plenty of wide European-style boulevards with ample room for European-style bike segregation, but that's another story...)

I fear the real issue is that the roads aren't strong enough. Albany St's tarmac is one of Edinburgh's worst examples of a patchwork of cable/piping refills. God knows what it will look like come Christmas.

Do you mean me or the ones TBC already has? I can take some this evening if you want.

Actually wasn't too bad this morning. I left for work a bit late so I don't know if that made a difference but I didn't see any queues except one caused by a driver wanting to parallel park in Albany Street. Seems that most drivers are avoiding the area which is fine by me.

Also meant to add - you definitely can't go down Broughton St northbound past Albany St, they have it all coned off and everything. You can turn left into in from Albany St though.

    Confused?

    yep, me too.

Whilst there are no actual potholes on it yet the single remaining eastbound lane on Queen Street across the top of Dublin Street is somewhat piggledy and will doubtless start cratering very quickly. FixMyStreeted, but whether anything can be done with it when it's the only lane remains to be see.
I saw a police car and a black cab going through the BUSES ONLY westbound lane along York Place yesterday evening. Don't know if a cyclist attempting the same thing would be hauled up for it as in the BUSES ONLY lane over at Hermiston Gait.

Presumably the cones/restriction of going north into Broughton St is to aid traffic flow - it wouldn't take much to back the traffic up to Picardy Place if someone was trying to turn across a stream of oncoming traffic from Albany St.

The cones are avoidable on a bike though. :-)

Aye, I just rode as if they hadn't repainted / coned the road this morning, but it was very quiet. On the way back I'll give some thought to whether or not the cones provide enough shelter for cyclists to wait for a gap in southbound traffic, or if the correct procedure is to hold everyone up just onto the side street and pull a u-turn.

I can confirm not. Or at least not this morning when I rode through, past a police traffic warden (remember them?) who was directing the confused traffic.

Lothian buses drivers excellent through that section too - not too long, and I was able to keep with the bus in front, so didn't feel hashed by the flow. Lots of confused motorists heading East as well - I see they've put in a mini-roundabout for people to U-turn back the way they came.

Classic last night. Waiting to cross at Albant Street and a WMV comes down Broughton, takes left onto Albany and then Uturns round the island onto the other side of Albany, left onto Broughton and on his merry way.

Obvious get around obviously. As PS says, the roads are actually very wide and permit large vans just swinging round with no need to do a proper turn in the road.
