Any one see the police traffic wardens stopping people going down Queensferry street from Lothian Road. I don't really see what the problem is apart from being against a no entry sign well except i suppose it goes through a pedestrian crossing.

Stopping people on a no entry

Were they targetting cyclists specifically?

I've never seen a car do that particular manoeuvre but lots of bikes do it every morning, i presume they must have been.

That used to be the way the road went, for bikes and buses. I never understood why they trashed it so badly, and often went through regardless (along with hundreds of other cyclists).
Lucky I don't work that way any more, eh?

I see exactly what the problem is, it's a marked no entry... if I did it in a car/ on a motorbike I would get points and a fine, if I do it on a cycle I would expect a fine just the same...
Is it any different to RLJ's? I would suggest not! We do not get to choose which laws apply to us unfortunately, they apply, whether stupid or not.Posted 14 years ago # -
Actually many cars do (or did used to) make that turn.
I know because the first couple of times I did it, I was following one and didn't actually realise they'd changed the signs until I came back the other way (up from Dean Bridge) to find I couldn't get across the road when the lights changed.
You're right though, exactly the same law applies in either case, and the same reward (which is probably why people do it in all types of vehicle, powered or not!)
(Edited to add: the layout on Google satellite view looks nothing like I remember. When I was there there was two way traffic from Lothian Road to Charlotte sq., and also from Charlotte Sq. to Dean Bridge (you just couldn't get from Lothian Rd to Dean Bridge except by going into Charlotte Sq, or ignoring a no left turn sign.) Now it looks like riding up a one-way street, which is nuts!)

Why, as a matter of interest is this left turn no longer allowed. Is it because the pub on the corner shed large amounts of masonary and required to be shored up and fixed. It is a pain having to follow the one-way system around the back off Shandwick Place, and where do you go when coming back from the Dean Bridge direction. I have never understood why the council changed the whole traffic system around Charlotte Sq, it worked well for centuries. Bureaucracy gone mad again, if it works, let's change it!!

You don't need to use the one way system or make a wrong left turn. Just carry on into Charlotte Square and between two buildings (don't know which ones sorry-the ones with a gap between I guess) there is a bike lane to Randolph Place and thence onto Queensferry Street. If you can't find it it is definately signposted from the Randolph Place end.
