Lionfish c. 830 this morning in a duffelcoat waiting to turn out of Gilmore Place towards Valleyfield Street?

Has the stenhouse road been repaired enough that citycycling official line is off the path and back on the road? Am sure I spotted kaputnik back on the road?

@Uberuce. Indeed, I was concentrating. I'd inadvertently not braked as much as usual. I looked down at the speedo and it said '30' and I thought "If I do brake now I'll be off, so I'll just cling on and hope I survive."

Large parts of the North Edinburgh cycle path, due to leaves having been cleared. Thanks City of Edinburgh Council.

pair of roadies, heading up towards the Calder roundabout yesterday.
they were in the right hand lane,so i assume going right at the roundabout.
not a road i would choose to cycle up,especially not out on the rightPosted 12 years ago # -
Rather splendid recumbent on the towpath heading west this morning:
If it's someone on here (which I assume it is), I was the one in the strange combination of black peaked cap with ear flaps, bright yellow jacket and jeans.

I think I see Min all the time but have only just realised that it might be her.
Do you cycle (this is what I can gather from spots) along plesance, through hermits croft sort of route, and down the innocent circa very early in the morning?I think I cross paths with you regularly as I'm heading to work (South College Street) or back home from the gym (along plesance)
I am the (mostly) helmetless bearded chap on a black orbea with cut off hipster style handlebars and a single speed conversion. I'm usually carrying my a chrome bag the size of a house on my back.
Also at the "Be bright be seen" type event in bristo square I spotted a nice Moulten which looked quite cool, wasn't sure whether it belonged to anyone here. Approx 12:30-1pm.

@custard I'm not entirely sure if it's intended that cyclists should be there!
Posted 12 years ago # -
I am not normally early in the morning but I do go that route. I will keep an eye out for you when I am about early though as your description sounds a bit familiar. I am on a black cross bike with white panniers and do not have a beard. Except that the cross broke this morning so I am on my folder, probably for the next week or two.

"Except that the cross broke this morning"???
In a serious way?

"Except that the cross broke this morning..."
Eep!

In a needs a new wheel way. :-( The rim is bust. How long have I been cycling? I hardly even use the back brake as the Surly just skids when I do and I checked the brake pads recently and there seemed to be loads left. Gutted.

@min rear wheels can be prone to rim failure if the spokes are over-tentioned due to the asymetric profile. I had a "touring" rim literally pull itself apart as the drive side had been over-tensioned in the factory.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Yes I suppose there can be other reasons for rim failure other than rider moronity! I did run my finger round them, probably about 6 weeks ago and they seemed fine.

"I suppose there can be other reasons for rim failure other than rider moronity!"
Now let's not rule anything out...
*runs away quickly*
*realises Min is on the folder and the ploy of darting onto public transport won't work*

Haha! I am not ruling it out! I would just be rather surprised since I am not exactly a novice and I do check these things. And I hardly use the back brake. I'm still capable of being a moron though. (there is no need to agree by the way, just to let you know..)

@Min, is that a Surly Cross Check? Alex DA-16 rims?
I had some rims with a similar profile which developed cracks around the spoke holes on the rear wheel. I bought them second hand and the previous owner must have really tightened the spokes... Still rode fine but I decided to replace.

@kaputnik
I had the same thought!
I was heading up the bypass and only got a glimpse of them but feared for them!Posted 12 years ago # -
@Crowriver the rim that failed on my bike was Alex DH19. A quick google turns up plenty of similar complaints on touring forums. LBS diagnosed that it is a single-eyeleted rim and therefore not up to taking the stress of over-tightened spokes on the drive side combined with touring loads.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Crow- yes indeed it is the Crosscheck. I'd have to check on the rims but that is what they usually come with.
I'm not exactly carrying touring loads (and am certain to be lighter than the average punter) but I guess reasonable weight plus hideous road surfaces every day could combine to put stress on.
Posted 12 years ago # -
@Kaputnik, and yet, the basic Alex Z-1000 rims on my Globe Vienna 2 hybrid have taken a real beating, carrying far more weight over extended periods than any 32 spoke rim should have to. They're still doing just fine 3.5 years later.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Hmm. Both the DA16 and the DH19 are listed as 'semi-aero profile'. Maybe the 'aero' bit is the issue? Non-aero rims presumably stronger?
Posted 12 years ago # -
Possibly Min on the Innocent at about 7.45am today, wearing red?
I hope so - I don't get many spots.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Yes, well done! I think I spotted you too in retrospect.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Steveo, briefly, on the downslope into the respective work car parks...
Posted 12 years ago # -
@crowriver I don't think it's the profile - a deep section should in theory be stronger than a flatter one. LBS blamed them only being single eyeleted.
Posted 12 years ago # -
K, I would agree; deep(er) V-section rims will have greater compressive strength, but often with greater weight and negligible aero advantage over regular box section rims. You have to get to a 4:1 or 6:1 chord ratio for a true airfoil shape, like you see on deep carbon rims with skinny tyres.
I used to have a pair of wheels made up of DA16 rims with DT Champion spokes and Hope hubs, and they were bombproof but a bit heavy.

Green recumbent, along Warrender Park Road just at the corner near the Argyle, at about 3 ish, this afternoon.

Nelly turning into Chalmers Crescent this evening. I was hiding behind an immense pizza box on the pavement
