A couple with a high-end, Rohloff-hubbed Thorn touring tandem outside the Observatory on Calton Hill yesterday afternoon. They had rode up. He was in a full set of tweeds including plus 2s and a cap, and had long woollen stockings and brogues to complete the outfit. She had knickerbockers and a tweed wasitcoat on over a highviz jacket. She also had a plastic sash of some description, looked like either an event or a charity ride of some sort. No luggage on the bike (but plenty of racks). They rode off in direction of Waterloo Place.

Woman this morning (1015AMish) locking up a basketbike on Chambers Street, in a full-face scooter-type helmet. Must be hot riding in that. Or maybe that's the idea?

Diamond Frame (!) LaidBack-provided town bike today...
Spotted the Magura hydraulic rim brakes first, then the Rohloff, then the dynamo hub and lighting - having already stared for long enough I didn't clock the make of these...
German manufacturer, as best I could gauge from the decals and no doubt reassuringly expensive, but would probably not warrant a second look from most folk!
A beauty,
Robert

Crowriver posted this in jest for the Cargomoot thread, but...
...actually spotted an older chap going along Broomhouse path with ladder on shoulder this lunchtime.

Gadzooks! 'Twas not in jest!
Verily our ancestors did forsake 'elf'n'safdee regs and set forth upon their merry way in such a manner, I kid ye not!

Did I spot Puzzle on Dundee Street waiting to turn down Ardmillan Terrace towards Gorgie/Dalry roads this morning?

Cc on red Paper Bicycle at Potterow. Shortly afterwards I parked the Fuego on its side after clipping the kerb at entrance to MMW. Fall distance about 20". Apart from entertaining the masses this gave me a chance to explain to cc why his rack still isn't here.
Should really have posted in bad cycling. I blame CEC for taking out bollard at entrance ;-)Posted 12 years ago # -
Kaptnuk - no that wasn't me.
Although I think I spotted Anth (Don't know his name on here) Jocks Lodge just after 8am, I was coming up Smoky Brae - he was coming from Portobello

The Artist Formerly Known As Anth is now known as Wilmington's Cow.
crow: you're just telling us young'uns stories to scare us... (Isn't he?)
Spotted: Morningsider, going up Comiston Road at something like 6.20. I was standing near my bike with three uncollected kids and don't believe I was counterspotted.

Hey Puzzle, that would have been me :)
I did think the cyclist coming up was lookin over in a friendly manner...

I think I've spotted you previously, on the royal mile (recently changed job location - new commute to work this week)I think you were your winter hat today, so I wasn't sure if it was you.

Aye, though the beanie came off a little later, was overheatin' the heid.
Saw Kirst this morning on the Innocent.

Possibly Fimm coming up to Gillespie crossroads this morning? I'd just turned right from Lanark Rd..
Also a surprising (to me) number of bicycles travelling around late last night, looking like the upsurge in cycling has not been dented by the low temperatures :-)

"surprising (to me) number of bicycles travelling around late last night, looking like the upsurge in cycling has not been dented by the low temperatures"
Gets more noticeable each 'winter'.
If you've started cycling (especially to work) in reasonable weather/day lengths, discovered some routes, acquired experience, waterproofs, lights etc. (and realised its mostly FUN) - adding extra layers is no great hardship.
Real challenge/barrier is probably (probability of) ice on your chosen route(s).
It remains to be seen how well the Council's intentions/promises are implemented. For some people main roads is an option, others will spend the money on studded tyres a few will find other means of transport.

"adding extra layers is no great hardship"
I'm still in same kit as all autumn. merino base layer with ebc windproof fleece, plus 'winter' tights (which, it being edinburgh, i wore all summer too...). And it's not like I go very far/fast.
Fingers were a bit cold despite heaviest winter gloves though :(

I saw a guy this morning cycling with one hand under his oxter, don't blame him!
Posted 12 years ago # -
@Smudge not I.
Potential ice is a major deterrant to me (given that my bike for the long commute is a light road bike with skinny tyres and minimal options for winterising).I also fell off my Brompton on ice (on an ungritted path in Livingston) and so the worst snow and ice tends to see me leaving that at home too. Which is a bit of a shame. It would be nice to be able to get to the office when no one else can, but I don't have the gear to do it.

"I saw a guy this morning cycling with one hand under his oxter..."
Saw two people on the way home yesterday (one going west along Charterhall Road, one going south on South Bridge) with both hands in their pockets. They'll be riding with their eyes closed to keep their corneae warm next.

Ahh well, the odd miss-spot isn't too bad!

Are (sub)urban cyclists becoming more friendly now that the weather is crueller yet nice? Yesterday, of the more or less 3 cyclists that I saw going the same way as me, all were happy to engage in conversation.
- one about the weather
- another about the weather and tyres
- the last about his spectacularly effective rear lightingPosted 12 years ago # -
cc in full Continental mode (Paperbike, basket, baguette), whilst I was on foot.
Given that I had both my mouth and hands full of bagel, I could only manage a discrete nod...

Greenroofer and spy in the optician's, as I was coming in to pay my idiot taxes.
One of my colleagues from the school also works there, so the sales rep was familiar with the tale behind me needing to purchase new glasses when my prescription hasn't changed to any functional degree. More giggling than you normally get during frame fittings, I suspect.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Reverse spot of Uberuce at the opticians. He, at least, was wearing cycling kit. It hadn't (until now) occurred to me why he needed to be there.
