Betighted Red Drafting Anorak (real name unknown) on the NEPN again, quite clearly speeding up by a couple of miles per hour after I went past him and dangling off my wheel all the way to Roseburn.

Whole family on bikes this morning at 0740 town-bound on the towpath out at Sighthill.

Man with tagalong and pre-school coxswean/boy and girl, both primary school age, on their own bikes/woman bringing up the rear.

Now the interesting thing is that the boy and girl both had immaculate Watson's uniforms on. Looks very much as if they were riding to school, which I think is wonderful (as well as being quite a long way!)

Cyclist infront of me trying to get across Gorgie Road over to Fords Road got bored of waiting for a gap in the traffic (you rarely get one at rush hour) so scooted along and pressed the crossing button.

I offered up my thanks as would probably still be waiting there now if he hadn't. I really must write to someone and moan about this junction as it's near impossible to get in or out of Fords Road across Gorgie Road, yet is the sensible quiet cycling route.

@CyclingEdin We'll have a look at this. Similar issue for motorists here. Will also discuss with our colleagues in Cycle Team ^D

Here's a related route I use sometimes (avoids another bit of Gorgie Road and a couple of sets of lights) when coming from Slateford Road.

Would be SO much better with some attention to detail - railings and dropped kerbs - then add a bit of paint.

This is what I want to do

    http://edinburgh.cyclestreets.net/journey/30149244/

The cyclestreets map is wrong, because Eltringham Terrace is closed at the Robb's Loan end. You have to bump across pavement and around the railings and then bump down again (or ride down a few metres to a dropped kerb for a driveway). I think it's "meant" to be a cut-through as the sign as you enter says no through road expect cyclists, or similar.

Eltringham Gardens isn't very useful as you have to scoot down a narrow lane and then there's a non-dropped kerb, or a stupid diversion around pavements. Plus there's normally lots of old folks around there going to/from the boolin' club.

    @k

    That's why I said -

"Would be SO much better with some attention to detail - railings and dropped kerbs"

Have had more issues with badly parked cars can peds - must be a 'time of day' thing.

I tend to go the way kaputnik has highlighted and when encumbered with the coxswean I'll bump up at the junction with Gorgie road and roll round to press the button to cross, Gorgie road tends to be too fast and with too few gaps to navigate with the child seat.

On the other hand, the main Hutchison Crossway / Gorgie Road junction has a handy advance Green Light which makes it feel slightly safer for getting out.

I take it cycling through the formal bit of Saughton Park is discouraged / frowned upon / impractical?

"I take it cycling through the formal bit of Saughton Park is discouraged / frowned upon / impractical?"

Formal bit - Rose Garden etc. yes.

If you go through the gates at those lights you turn right and get the Skatepark. Turn right there and there is the ped/cycle crossing to the northbound WoL path. Turn left and it's tarmac to Fords Road.

OR left after the gate and there is a rougher route to Fords Road.

Would be nice if the gates were partly open like the ones at Inverleith Park so it wasn't necessary to go on pavement.

Think it's just a short 'normal' green phase.

Very short - if you are behind a couple of cars, likely to get a red.

Would help if the keep left bollard was moved and a cycle lane and ASL put in

Hmmm, I thought there was a green overlap with Balgreen Road.

Coming down from Hutchison the green goes a few moments before the turning traffic from Balgreen, the Hutchison green doesn't last nearly as long as the Balgreen though.

But are you sure it's actually green in both directions - even for a very short time?

    Unnecessary danger.

Yes, well fairly. I'll try to remember to check, won't be this evening though.

I might do a little bit of filming one day if I remember to take my camera and tripod.

Well, actually heard. Someone shouted "all the way" as they rode past whilst I was discretely trying to hide my bike in the car at Barnton on the way home. They must have disapproved of my laziness today.

Hello, if it was anyone on here. :)

    New ramp and school trip

OK not that new (NEPN to South Trinity Road) - first time I've been by since it opened.

    I assume it's a school.

About 10 cyclists (seemingly independent) seen in the Dobbies area at about 7.30 this morning. I normally am lucky to see even one cyclist in the area on the morning commute, though I don't usually go in this way during the summer (usually go via Musselburgh) and it was later than normal.

Loadsa cyclists this morning - including two going the same way as me! One I passed at the Gilespie Crossroads, and the other passed me and immediately went a different way at the crossing of the A71.

There were tonnes (probably literally) of cyclists heading out of town yesterday, sweating up Braid Road.

Let's hope that numbers stay up as the weather worsens.

Councillor Burns + 3 waiting to navigate the King's junction this morning. Perhaps we could write to him for advice on the best way to negotiate this junction seeing as he must use it most days on his route to work?
