I was spotted tonight in the rain by Mr H of just bikes. Now, I would ask that we adopt his salutation as it works well for my west coast genes.

What you do is you raise your right arm in the air (if heading east), punch the air repeatedly and shout GEMBO, GEMBO, GEMBO

Obviously, only using my Mentchie if it is me you are spotting.

What I am asking for is the enthusiasm, please.

I was spotted by a shouty, wavy man this morning. Only later did I clock it was Gembo

While waiting for the 38 bus this morning, I spotted a very bright light, then gradually worked out that the profile of the bike was that of a helios. It was the HP feeder ride leader (who sometimes lurks on here).

I waved and said hi, but she was in the zone (or thought I looked dodgy, which given the black eye is probably about right)

    @kaps

Excellent photo clearly showing me heading east with my right arm raised and shouting Kaps, Kaps, Kaps, demonstrating my preferred spotting technique, but only if conditions are safe.

Also my ten pound Aldi jacket looking quite white

Spotted instography coming off the roundabout at Admiralty in Fife, so joined him for a cycle along Haymarket and Shandwick Place. Haymarket seamed fine heading east as did the approach to Shandwick Place. On Shandwick Place however its just silly. Nose to tail busses and other vehicles. We got off at the end and walked over to Charlotte Sq where we found a quieter alternative.

"Nose to tail busses and other vehicles"

Presume that includes ones that shouldn't be there?

Bus, taxi (not sure about private hire, but probably not) and bikes.

  7. kaputnik again this morning heading into Tarvit Street - seems when I'm walking it coincides perfectly with that point of kaputnik's commute.

There is a filter lane forcing non BUS, CYCLE and TAXI traffic down Coasts Cres, which 'other' traffic use as a feader lane onto Shandwick Place. Not cycled down there so don't know if there are restricted use signs. A van we followed from West Maitland at Athol Place we went stright on through the tramworks and it went down Coats Cres, then emerged behind us as we all went onto Shandwick Place.

But there were enough busses to clog up Shandwick Place!! We had to stop in the throng half way down before we could progress to the lights outside Abby (National).

Cycling West to East is fine as far as tramlines go, as unless you turn towards Torphicen there are none to cross. What is annoying is that there are now no filter lanes, bus lanes and no ASLs so you have to sit amongst the general traffic and breathe facefulls of Lothian Buses diesel fumes as you wait it out at the lights. If I ever have the need to go this way I think I'll happily take aforementioned diversionary routes.

    Don't park on the pavement

Especially within 30 seconds walk of the wardens' office.

@kappers That is Tom Allen, of Twitter's parish, and the trike is supplied by a certain local recumbent specialist outlet that will remain nameless unless someone says LaidBack.

I crossed paths with him recently and stopped for a blether. Lovely chap.

Gosh that cargo trike is lovely. It's almost enough to warrant having some sproggs so I could justify buying one.

Have you thought that one through. The kids will outgrow the bakfiets and what will you do with them then?

    Forgot about this from Friday:

Along the top of Morrison St a taxi driver leaned out of his window to shout stuff at me. Turned out he was shouting hello with a beaming smile, as it was a guy I used to work with.

Then spotted a couple riding a rare Zohrer recumbent tandem, coming out of NMW onto Melville Drive. Laid Back thought they might have been visiting from Glasgow.

From the bar of the Balmoral Hotel on Saturday afternoon, I spotted a Hase Pino going up North Bridge with a Mr Roibeard +1 at the helm.

I saw the recumbent tandem on the pleasance on Sunday around 10:30 - they continued down towards Dalkeith Road and we turned off towards the meadows (facilitated by some awesome driving by a bin lorry) - didn't get the chance to say hello...

Kaps in the bar of balmoral on a Saturday afternoon means missing a four year old's birthday on Sunday morning?

    Sensible advice

    The smart way to cycle
    in Edinburgh's Parks
    • Choose a safe speed based on:
Your experience of the park and its hazards.
    The width of the path.
When the park is busy or when children are walking to school.
The conditions - looking out for ice. wet leaves and surface water.
    • Keep to the left side of the path and be aware of walkers and dogs crossing in front of you.
    • Avoid wet and muddy ground and keep to the paths in woodlands.

Do your bit by following the Park Management Rules
    http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/parkrules
Remember, damage and injury to a third party are offences which could lead to fines,
and if you don't act safely and consider others, you could be asked to leave the park.
