Seems to be a Russian family in charge of canal canoes? They like to paddle whilst kneeling, I notice.

I believe the difference between canoeing and kayaking is that you kneel in the former and sit in the latter?

Difference has to do with paddle more than paddling style (one blade or double) also canoes are 'open' not covered cockpits.

In a kayak, the paddler is seated in the direction of travel, and uses a double-bladed paddle. In a canoe the paddler kneels on one knee with the other leg forward and foot flat on the floor inside the boat, and paddles a single-bladed paddle on one side only.

according to the International Canoe Federation - but I'm sure that applies strictly only to sportskayaking and sportscanoeing, and on canoe and kayak forums a perennial argument is raging about whether people consider themselves utility canoeists, kayak commuters or "persons in a small boat".

Kneeling while canoeing is a good idea (silly people here sit on seats, get their centre of gravity too high and tip in). But as K'nik suggests, utility paddling does not worry about how many knees you have up or down.

Spotted a recumbent from the bus in this morning, in Dalgety Bay. His route / location and direction of travel means he lives in the Bay or was taking a convoluted ride along the coast and up to the shops?

    Anyone on here?

George (EBC)'s bike has swanky and functional hubs.

Oh - and I forgot to note a spot of Morningsider on Bruntsfield Links the other morning ...

    Belated report from 0745 Friday...

Heading into town on the towpath out by Wester Hailes what I take to be a family: two children on their own bikes accompanied by a woman and a man with a tagalong and child number three.

What a great way to get to school!

Laidback, at the cafe on the Prom at Silverknowes. As Angelo was there on his Fuego also, I think I should get double points.

Friday - riding (slowly) along Gilmore Place, I spotted two middle-aged BME women wheeling two obviously brand new bikes along the pavement.

Intrigued, I stopped to give them leaflet for the women on wheels day (part of edfoc). turns out they're part of a charity/community group, have 10 bikes, don't know how to ride them!

I gave them my details and offered to go for a ride with them (and to put them in touch with cycle trainers if needed)

I'd love to know more about the process they've been through to get this far. they seemed quite excitied, and they had lovely EBC ladies revolution heritage bikes with baskets and all (but heavy?). but i wonder who chose the bikes. lady I spoke with first was very admiring of my folder - i think because it looked smaller, easier to get on. less intimidating maybe? i then made a point of telling her how nice hers was too. but it did make me wonder if some old raleigh shoppers might have been a better starting point?

anyway, good for them. hope it works out. hope i get to go for a ride with them!

Laidback coming through the Shandwick Place (sorry, west Princes Street) tramstop on Sunday afternoon, about 445PM? Head could just about see over the platform!

Not a bike but saw a horse-drawn hearse at the Coop funeral parlour opposite the Caley Sample House this morning. Very beautiful animals which seemed remarkably unfazed by the levels of traffic around them.

Black and ethnic minority looks like the
    most likely candidate.

@fimm, I think, based on SRD's work background, that it stands for Black & Minority Ethnic. I had to look it up.

Spotted... the lot of you, back on CCE forum after a quiet weekend. Everyone must have jolly nice employers (self-employed counts too!) - I never get a chance when I'm at work (day off today while the loft is getting insulated. :)

    Thank you.

A potential paranormal experience on the way home....

On the way home tonight, just crossed the crossing at Barnton and going down the hill towards Cramond Brig I hear this cry of "LOOK OUT FOR PEDESTRIANS".

I immediately thought, maybe I'm going too fast? Mind you, any of the Fifer's that's ever cycled with me would I'm sure never accuse me of that, I'm pretty sure. Anyway, thought maybe I am, checked my computer, and I'm doing 17.9mph going down the incline, hardly excessive I thought. On getting home I double checked, and my average for the 22.1 miles was 11.9mph, and sure enough I topped out at 17.9mph on that little hill, and I never saw another pedestrian until I reached the FRB.

So the conclusion I have come to is that there must have been pedestrians falling from the sky, and he was simply warning me, luckily I never encountered any of this paranormal activity and made it home unscathed.

Two office trews wearing commuters at toll cross waiting at the lights. One of them on a spiffy new cannondale with a topbar food bag attached, the other on a beat up old mountain bike that was too small for him, however the casualness of both their attire was nice to see for what was evidently a short commute.
