IWRATS, sorry to hear about your chain. Good you had a chain link, I must get some that actually fit my chains. Just after we saluted another guy appeared in a marmite jersey. I tried to hi five him but he just smiled and said nice top

Roibeard looking nifty on his Brompton twice - once last night south down Hope Park Crescent from the meadows, just as pinged I two spokes at once, and once again this morning in the pouring rain at the Argyle Place meadows crossing… I was on foot due to the above misfortune.
Also Morningsider for a cheery wave the other morning…

Does Purple Helmet Lady have a pale purple or bright purple helmet? I ask because as I was going up Lanark Road about 7:15 this morning I saw a lady in normal clothes on a nice step-through bike going down the hill, wearing a pale purple/lilac coloured helmet, and I wondered if that could be her.

Genuine euro bikes - presume tourists. Don't know if they couldn't hack the traffic (Lothian Road just round from Princes Street).

@fimm
I'd say that Purple Helmet Lady's helmet was plum...but I'm not good with colours. It's certainly not a violent violet, or a deep purple.
Her movements are mysterious. She is to be seen heading into town anywhere between Dalton's scrap on Gogar Station Road and the canal viaduct from ten to nine to about ten past nine. I never see her on the return leg. This morning she was on the canal at the bypass at five past nine.
Other characteristics are;
1) Nice white step-through with rear derailleur
2) Cheery demeanour
3) Red jacket in cold/rain
4) Over-size 'fashion' shades in bright conditions
5) Scottish accentIt would be an interesting exercise to recruit her to CCE. Is this a mission you might accept?

Given that the person I saw was out and about at 7:10am I'm not sure that I spotted Purple Helment Lady. I was out on my road bike doing my long commute, which I only do about once a week, so I'm not sure that I'm the best person to do any CCE recruting!
Other spots - several cyclists in the East/Mid Calder/Livingston area (which is unusual), including a woman on a road bike (even more unusual).

@fimm
I see Purple Helmet Lady on the return leg quite regularly, in the same places as IWRATS, but going the other way.
Her helmet is definitely not lilac or pale purple: it's quite dark, and it's definitely purple. Probably not who you saw.

@Greenroofer
Good to know. I had concocted a theory that she went in on the canal and out on the A8, or worked part-time.
In other canal news; Sleeves Up maintained his sleeves up approach despite the rain. Martin Clunes looked even more Clunes-esque with a soggy, downbeat aspect. Gembo was wisely absent, early or late.
The Suit, Genial Wobbler, Tit-for-Tat, Speed Freek and 2Kool4Skool were nowhere to be seen. I wonder what they call me? The crossing guy at Myreside hails me as 'Big Red Bell' on occasion.
Oh, and thanks for the railway snicket reminder. Tried it, and it was mercifully free of dog-eggs.

I was a little earlier but not wiser. Instead I engaged in a false spot of pixelmix.
Was overtaken at about same spot beyond Easter hailes gait tunnel on the WoL path. Guy on light blue racer. I gave chase. As the guy was not receding into the distance I should have conclude not pixelmix. Instead of erroneous conclusion, pixelmix goes slower in the rain. Anyway belted it and overtook on towpath shouting Allez pixelmix. I then stopped for a puppy belonging to a jogger who was taking a time tying his shoelace. Lucky I did as pup ran straight in front of me.
I then told fake pixelmix that he would never have caught me if it hadn't been for the jogger. Fake pixelmix seemed to have no idea what I was on about. The best he could muster was he did not do strava. Fortunately he decided to go to leith via Harrison park. Blue Croix de fer, gears and everyfink no idea given the slowness of pace why I thought ice was pixelmix. Very nice chap tho

I adopted my usual wimpy attitude in the rain this morning and had elected for the road route instead, which should be marginally cleaner and quicker. Unfortunately the latter didn't pan out as I had one of those annoying mornings at Haymarket where the tram takes forever to trundle past, holding me at a red light for ages. At least it had stopped raining by then.
The blue singlespeed was treated to a rare wash this evening which should make me easier to spot. I might need to use the CX bike instead soon to add an air of mystery (and an extra few gears for dropping any chasing gembos)

Single speed plenty to keep ahead of me

@algo - sorry for missing the HPC spot, I was no doubt negotiating hazards rather than spotting people.
I did manage the pedestrian spot though!
The Meadows has been good for spotting recently - easy ones for Laidback and a Kaputnik spot (or him of us) at the weekend when we were trying out an Urban Arrow.

spotted: lots and lots and lots of cyclists on the way in. I thought summer was last week?
Posted 10 years ago # -
There were also unusually high numbers on the Innocent. People getting up earlier or the weather?
Posted 10 years ago # -
And even more on the way home including a tandem
Posted 10 years ago # -
Was unusually quiet on way home, some outside urinators in the cowgate. Not many cars, towpath short of walkers.
On the WoL path approached grandchild of earlier grannies. About twenty. Two Yorkies on leash two earphones in ears one phone in hand being used for texting purposes.. Had to get off and push as she could not hear bell or indeed me saying I am coming passed on left(she moved left), I am coming passed on right (she moved right). I dismounted and walked around. Chap behind signalled her earphones were preventing her hearing things. She asked us if we thought we had right if way. I admire her pluck.

Meant to say spotted SRD reading the paper whilst the krazee ruschians kayaked
Posted 10 years ago # -
Drat. I was looking out for you!
Have been in a boat most other weeks. Didn't feel up to it this week. Could you hear me coughing all the way across the canal?
Posted 10 years ago # -
No but I could hear you rustling those pages. I think antibiotics but I always say that now

I think that's the beast I see in Gorgie every so often by the Maplin.
Also: seconded gembo's Spot of you at the kayak. Waved, but was on the park path, not the towpath and thus remained unseen.

I think that's the beast I see in Gorgie every so often by the Maplin.
That's the same Roulandt that has accompanied its rider on previous POPs.

Spotted SRD and miniSRD a few car lengths ahead of me in Polwarth earlier. Thought briefly about following to say hello but isn't in the spirit of 'spotted', especially since I was in disguise today (a taxi incident yesterday rather got to me), so I may have been only vaguely heard in the background noise.

Sorry. Always pretty distracted along there. Yesterday a Lothian 27 (bus #208) over took me between the stop just before Merchiston ave and the roundabout. Totally unnecessarily. The one place where you need to take the lane - because the cars leaving Merchiston ave can't see without edging out, and because of the cars that pull out unexpectedly.

Exchanged waves with daisydaisy on Myreside Road this afternoon. She must have been running late because we normally only pass on the days I'm doing the school run.
Just after I'd put my hand back on the bars from waving, this guy came flying by on a singlespeed orange Genesis and went powering up Craighouse Hill (according to Strava he hit 28mph as he approached the bottom of the hill).
Strava flyby is very appealing to the nosy amongst us..

I see that guy pretty often, although usually he's stooring up Comiston Road as I'm rolling down it at 6pm.

Greenroofer and I exited our place of work at the same time last night and we cranked a few clicks of the canal together, comparing theories on taking primary and hub gears versus derailleurs.
I was able to point out Sleeves Up, Speed Phreak and Upside Down Riser Bar Guy.
I had hoped for a high energy collision on the linear aqueduct resulting in an IWRATS/antiIWRATS pair and the emission of a high energy Gembo ray, but it wasn't to be.
Posted 10 years ago # -
Surely that would be a IWRATS/IWWATS pair?
