you could start a whole new blog called "deliverybikesbeingusedforwindowdressingandnotdeliveryinedinburgh.blogspot.com"

(caveat - not sure if that particular bike is roadworthy, but it's not really parked like it goes in and out of the shop a lot)

Spotted from my breakfast table this morning - Wilmington's Cow going up London Road, with a heavily laden Carradice swinging jauntily behind him.

There's a guy I now pass most morning near Ainslie Park who has lots of dreadlocks bundled up into a bandana and wearing spraypainters safety goggles. Maybe he has a job as a painter or maybe it's to keep the flies out.

I see a lot of this sort of thing. Many businesses like to use bikes to show they are environmentally friendly without the danger and perceived inconvenience of having to do any actual cycling.

I can't remember which comic said it, but I always liked the idea of the ubiquitous mid-nineties Irish pub being an ordinary Edinburgh pub with nitro-keg Guinness and a bicycle nailed to the ceiling.

Or painfully fashionable. Dare I say it, "hip".

    "Or painfully fashionable"

Element of that, perhaps also 'retro', 'old fashioned', 'slow' (the fashionable sort - esp re 'food').

So, 'we' want a shop/caff/pub to have the latest in speed-machine or fully-functioning town bike?

It's (probably) a good thing if cycling is 'fashionable' - more people might try it - and like it enough to keep cycling when 'fashion' has moved on(?)

I'm going to introduce a new (@IWRATS?) entry to the CCE canal towpath/Meadows cycle commuter spotters' handbook, who I will refer to as Shy Smiling Lady. I've seen her fairly regularly for some time now, although recently she has started responding to my attempted eye-contact (as I *try* with most people, following up with some level of nod/smile/greeting when successful) with a fairly subtle but friendly smile of recognition. She has blonde hair, doesn't wear a helment, and is often wearing blue (I think).

"CCE canal towpath/Meadows cycle commuter spotters' handbook"

    Mmm

"Spotted" used to be about (maybe) spotting other CCEers or interesting bikes (often a two-in-one spot!)

This 'topic' has been straying between a few different threads - perhaps it needs one itself? I blame IWRATS.

This could end up getting a bit like the "I Saw You" in the List, if it's still in there.

Or "I know what you did last summer"?

I'm sure you're right, and I humbly accept my responsibility. I've never had much interest in rules, but I am a keen member of the observer corps. Spotting things is a joy. I know of no harm ever done by someone spotting something. Sharing spots may not always be a good thing, but it surely sometimes is.

I think your Shy Smiling Lady may be my Genial Wobbler. I shall take note of her apparel this week.

I'm now working to get Lilac Helmet Lady to link my cycling and running personas. It's early days - she is still slightly startled to be hailed by a mercurial jogger.

@IWRATS I Googled "Genial Wobbler" and looked up your description. I'm not sure that it is the same person, but we shall see. I walked home along the canal a month or two ago and was passed by Lilac Helment Lady. I tried to make eye contact, but she didn't even glance at me...

Sorry to hear that LHL has withheld eye contact. I'm sure nothing was meant by it.

    Today's news is that Martin Clunes is just back from holiday (deep tan) and is limping slightly. A new character - The Dark Talker - has come onto the scene. You will know him by;

    * All black winter MTB kit worn on the hottest summer day so far
    * White hands free phone kit always present
    * Usually talking. Hopefully on the phone
    * I assumed him to be a recent arrival from a very hot country (he is olive skinned) but his accent is a London one

I'm agog to see what he wears in winter. Presumably a wolfskin anorak and leggings.

@IWRATS I didn't take it personally, but it seemed that my status as a pedestrian was not worthy of attention.

I generally attempt to make eye contact with pedestrians as much as other cyclists, although it is generally the other cyclists that are somewhat more likely to respond.

Ah yes, I do recognise The Dark Talker but have yet to catch his accent - he looks rather Mediterranean to me.

Recumbent trike, recumbent-ing along West Maitland Street this morning - anyone here?

Also loads of other bikes of all shapes and sizes out in the sun, including yet another Bobbin Birdie - this time pink-flavoured, in the work bike racks.

Work bike racks full this morning. Had to lock and cable my wheels to an access ramp to a building services room.

EDIT - just realised I've not mentioned spotting anything. Well I did spot a guy wearing Team GB/sky track bibshorts (the union flag ones) combined with a Cannondale-Liquigas jersey. Bright and visible, yes, but an assault on pleasant colour combinations.

portobello beach man's bike and trailer appears to have been left unlocked at the south exit of Waverely overnight.

I was spotted by Laid Back on Sunday evening as I spun my way down from Potterrow along a nearly deserted QBiC. Then while wending my way through the Meadows, I spotted Rugg Tomcat's bike and trailer parked up next to who I presumed to be The Beastie Drummers, who were all going at it hammer and tongs.

Recumbent crossing at the lights at the
Balgreen tram stop around 5.15 this evening.

I think that it may have been another potential spotting of Arellcat.

T'was me, Stickman, evidently completely ignoring my own plan to take the main, footie fan-avoiding road into town.

A grupetto of Auchendinny RC passed me on the Gilmerton Road. Nice jerseys and I had a wee chat with one at the Lady Road lights. However they did make me feel rather slow (not that it takes much).

If you are commmuting on Gilmerton Road then there is a chance of a spot. How shall I know you? (Ye shall know me by my red forks and oversize red bell on a ratty nineties hybrid.)

@IWRATS I'm usually on a black Spa Audax racing bike with a black Carradice Nelson saddlebag, black mudguards and gold cabling. I do have a bell but it will take some spotting. And of course I am extremely fast ;) (unless the Auchendinny RC are nearby). I'm easy to spot in the winter half of the year than now since I tend to take the direct route in worse conditions.

You will know Amir as he is the cyclist not wearing the pink cap.

Spotted that the bike racks outside Ryrie's Bar at Haymarket have "moved" - the ones in the middle of the pavement have gone and there are new ones next to the railings. This creates a much bigger open space in front of the bar.

Gembo/IWRATS interaction on the aqueduct. IWRATS, taking various factors into account, attempted to insert a veiled Half Man Half Biscuit reference into the chat. In retrospect Gembo possibly not as impressed by three chord Wirral pub rock backing gnomically poetic lyrics as IWRATS is.
